Safe recruitment of coaches and other support staff
The Primary School Sport Premium Funding for primary schools in England has enabled many primary schools to involve the support of coaches to enhance their PE and school sport offer. Before appointing support staff, the school will consider whether it is safe and effective to do so. With the horrific stories of historic child abuse within Football dominating the news it is essential that all schools are aware of the procedures and safeguarding they need to have in place when recruiting coaches into their school environment.
Safe recruitment procedures include disclosure and barring service checks, examining governing body of sport qualifications and coaching licences, and verifying identification.
The effectiveness of the appointment will be determined by the expertise they bring to the school, and how this
extends the professional learning of school staff, as well as improving the quality of student learning experiences and broadening the school sport and PE offer.
Here are seven key procedures that all head teachers and/or recruiting managers of coaching staff need to ensure they carry out before and during the coaches employment within their school.
1. Face-to-face interviews 2. School induction 3. Check the qualifications and prior experience of coach
4. Day-to-day management of the coach
5. Monitoring the quality and effectiveness of the coach
6. Identifying and providing professional learning provision for the coach
7. Dealing with inadequate performance by the coach
