OUR VALUES

HEART OF GLASS IS COMMITTED TO ART, THE ARTS, PARTICIPATION AND PRACTICE.

They are the four key principles at the heart of our mission, and our work toward them is underpinned by a firm commitment to our seven core values:

Diversity - We are wholly committed to diversity in all things. We are a non-venue based organisation, our programme is mixed art form and our delivery is underpinned by an unapologetic eschewing of compartmentalising within accepted norms. The organic result of this approach is a diverse audience experiencing diverse art forms in diverse settings.

Cultural Democracy - Our programme is co-created with the people and communities of St Helens, engaging the widest range of people possible in the co- design and co-production of art, thus enabling people to access arts and cultural experiences from which, for a whole range of reasons, they had been previously excluded. This democratisation of arts and artistic practice drives our core CPP aim, to increase cultural engagement across the borough.

Inclusion - Our approach is based on open, transparent and participatory practice, recognising and equally valuing the contributions of artists, individuals and communities to our overall mission and vision, and in their own right. Our work with a broad range of communities of interest across the borough brings all of these diverse perspectives to the development of St Helens as a place, fostering and encouraging a more inclusive social and economic context.

Cohesion – Heart of Glass is built on the strength of our partnership consortium at its core. We are committed to building strong and cohesive partnership networks across the borough and beyond to stimulate innovation in ideas and practice, enhance the quality and reach of our work, and to support the creation and establishment of a dynamic, vibrant and sustainable arts ‘ecosystem’.

WHAT STRIKES ME IS THE FACT THAT IN OUR SOCIETY, ART HAS BECOME SOMETHING WHICH IS RELATED ONLY TO OBJECTS AND NOT TO INDIVIDUALS, OR TO LIFE. THAT ART IS SOMETHING WHICH IS SPECIALIZED OR WHICH IS DONE BY EXPERTS WHO ARE ARTISTS. BUT

COULDN’T EVERYONE’S LIFE BECOME A WORK OF ART?

WHY SHOULD THE LAMP OR THE HOUSE BE AN ART OBJECT, BUT NOT OUR LIFE?

MICHEL FOUCAULT PHILOSOPHER 1926-1984

Responsiveness – Our partnerships can only work if they are sustained by effective and reciprocal channels of communication, within our own team, with artists and communities, and with the wider network of Heart of Glass’ stakeholders, supporters and funders. We are committed to open and accessible two-way communication, and work to understand and always respond constructively and positively.

Leadership – As part of an action research programme working at the forefront of participatory arts practice, we ensure our learning, research and experiences are shared with partners and stakeholders across the arts and cultural sector. Working through new and existing relationships, we seek to enhance our own thinking and practice by ensuring it is informed by cutting-edge research and development. We will continue to invest in development of artistic practice and leadership at a local level not only to seek out best practice, but also to create the infrastructure so that it can be embedded in St Helens.

Innovation - We are a learning organisation, open to change and committed to continuous improvement, and recognise that the ongoing growth and development of Heart of Glass, the arts ‘ecology’ of St Helens and the borough as a whole can only be achieved by a process of creative exchange, regular review and a willingness to experiment. We actively seek out new ideas, partnerships and collaborations, working across borders and barriers in the pursuit of creative growth, spark, energy and innovation.
