Blessed with large swathes of virtually untouched countryside, much of Romania follows a way of life that has been extinguished elsewhere in Europe, and the century’s old folklore and traditions still thrive in its picturesque villages. Our tour goes right to the heart of this captivating country - rather than simply skim over its highlights we take you not only to important cultural gems such as the medieval towns of Sighisoara and Sibiu in Transylvania, but spend time getting to grips with life in the villages, often staying in rural communities where local culture is at its strongest. We traverse the spectacular Carpathian Mountains, home to bears and wolves, and explore the Danube Delta.

The tiny nation of Moldova rarely features on any travel itineraries, but is an intriguing place to explore. Our group tour to this largely ignored corner of Europe takes in sprawling underground wine cellars and dramatic cave monasteries, as well as including a trip to the quirky breakaway republic of Transdniestr. With a variety of influences from Orthodox Christianity to Soviet Russia, as well as the local gypsy culture, Moldova is well worth a visit. The wine is surprisingly good as well!
