Trickle-Down Just finished reading and enjoyed your article (“Trucking Trends Leading

the Way”) in the STN November 2016 magazine. Tank you for sharing the not-so-obvious (to many) common threads between these two industries! As we often observe here, there’s a lot more to student transportation than most people have ever imagined! —Jack De Forrest III, Director of Transportation, North East ISD in San Antonio, Texas

“NHTSA Eyes National Campaign Targeting Illegal School Bus Passing” stnonline.com/go/99 NHTSA publishes a report every year on School Transportation-Related

Crashes that covers the most recent 10-year period nationwide. Averaging all the reports for data from 1999 to 2014, there is an average of 36 under-age-19 pedestrians killed in a 10-year period nationwide. In that same time frame an average of 88.43 under-age-19 pedestrians are killed by the buses. Passing cars kill 29 percent of these kids, 71 percent are killed by the buses. A legitimate safety campaign would first go after the 71 percent killed by the buses. Te problem with that higher safety approach is that there are no profits to be gained. Te for-profit camera companies are pushing for nearly-useless stop arm cameras to make multi-millions of dollars in profits going after the 29 per- cent of these under-age-19 pedestrian fatalities. It is about money, not safety. —James C. Walker, National Motorists Association

“FMCSA Releases Final Rule for New CDL Applicants” stnonline.com/go/98

While the FMCSA and US DOT come up with all of these new regulations for us CDL drivers, nothing is being done to re-educate and reinforce basic driving skills the non-CDL holders seem to neglect and have an air of enti- tlement on the road. Most of the accidents that CDL drivers have are due to non-CDL holders constantly cutting us off, jumping in front of a commercial vehicle, because they don’t want to be behind the so-called slow commercial vehicle, their sudden lane changes and squeezing between the commercial vehi- cle and the other non-commercial, closing the safety space, etc. Point blank, something needs to be done about the people who don’t know how the rules of the road really apply, because CDL drivers are not the problem. —”Bruce”
