An emergency response team or emer-
gency action team—commonly known as a SWAT team—is deployed. A perimeter is established around the school bus and an assessment of the situation is created using witnesses and an unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone. If the crisis can’t be resolved peacefully,
the school bus must be breached to rescue the hostages. Tactical units convene. Flashbangs explode. Men brandishing an array of armor and weapons storm the school bus, putting an end to the situa- tion, the assailant either captured or dead, though usually the latter. Forty volunteers from the audience
wore white vests to represent the hostages. 6 THE SHOW REPORTER • NOVEMBER 4–8, 2016
Each situation was handled with swift finesse, or as it was referred to: speed, sur- prise and shock to take down the assailant as quickly as possible with no injury to the hostages. All the while the action was eye-open- ing and educational, each speaker emphasized that, first and foremost, they are constantly seeking the “most peaceful resolution possible” before going ahead with an “appropriate level of force.” While few in attendance may never
have to utilize these “bits of education,” as one police captain referred to them as, it is better to be prepared than be caught surprised. l
