thelog.com Meier drives Medicine Man to win in light-air pursuit race By Rick Roberts
LONG BEACH — On a day that dawned with only a whisper of a breeze, the Long Beach Yacht Club race committee was able to pull off the 2016 Two Gates Pursuit Race with skipper Lisa Meier taking first overall and first in Class A on Bob Lane’s Andrews 63, Medicine Man, in this annual first-of- the-year race hosted by Long Beach YC.
Twenty-nine skippers and their teams hung out as the race committee waited for a bit of consistent breeze to get the fleet of various types of sail- boats to the start line. The race was an inverted-start PHRF race where the slowest boats start first and the fastest boats start last in hopes of catching up. After an hour-and-a-half postpone- ment, the race committee started the first boat on the shorter, 5.17-nautical- mile Course 2 as opposed to the usual 13.2-nautical-mile course, which, if chosen, would have had most of the fleet finishing in the dark. “This was really a privilege,” Meier
said, “to have an offer to sail with Medicine Man’s crew who are some of sailing’s best. I had an incredible time on an incredible boat with the unbeat- able support of my comrades. It was a
fact that the race boats weave in and out of Long Beach’s Queen’s Gate har- bor entrance and Los Angeles’ Angel’s Gate harbor entrance. This year, Long Beach YC added a
shorter 5.17 nautical mile course as a backup in the event the weather didn’t cooperate.

SoCal 300 launches California Offshore Race Week
Organizers of the SoCal 300 have announced a new circuit to the race series: California Offshore Race Week. The new race was the brainchild of
racer Manouch Moshayedi, owner of Rio 100, who wanted to create a down- wind race through the Channel Islands. “The race was created as there were quite a few boats who wanted a new offshore challenge and were excited to race in the waters between San Francisco and San Diego as they are predominantly windy which will make for a great ride down the coast,” said SoCal 300 Event Coordinator David
Servais. “The stopover ports were selected as they seem to be the most fun port cities to vacation in while coming down the coast.” Five yacht clubs — Encinal, San
Francisco, Monterey Peninsula, Santa Barbara and San Diego — have joined forces and races to provide offshore racers with ocean-rated boats on a course from San Francisco to San Diego with stops in Monterey and Santa Barbara. Racers can either compete in the
entire weeklong event or they can join in any of the individual races. California Offshore Race Week starts

Doug Mills Series to kick off racing season ON THE RADAR
NEWPORT BEACH — Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club will launch the beginning of the 2016 race season with the Doug Mills Series in February. The race premiered in 2015 and was named for Bahia Corinthian YC Commodore Doug Mills. Mills, who served at the club’s commodore in 1996, was an avid sailor and racer. His wife, Sandy, is currently serving as Bahia Corinthian’s YC commodore. The Doug Mills Series kicks off the racing season in Newport Beach with the
first race of the series on Feb.13; races two and three follow on March 5 and April 9. The series is a random leg and has something for everyone, including a cruising
class. Boats racing without a spinnaker in the cruising class will be scored using the PHRF Area D RLC Rating plus the boat’s Non-Spinnaker Offset. Races will be scored on the Low Point System for each day’s race. The series will
be scored according to the Rinderle B Table. All racers are invited to celebrate their achievements at the post race trophy
party at the Bahia Corinthian YC Clubhouse. Take home trophies are awarded after each race; trophies for the series will be given out after the last race on April 9. The club also offers complimentary overnight guest dockage for race entrants. Call Waterfront Manager Susie Brodrick for reservations at 949-644-9530.
