North Yorkshire primary school has put care on the curriculum, and is planning to set up a host of homes for wildlife.
Birds and bats can flock to Grove Road Community Primary School in Harrogate after housebuilder Redrow Homes feathered the school's nest with a collection of boxes for the popular creatures.
Year 5 and 6 teacher, and science leader, Paul Draper said the school has already undertaken a variety of wildlife projects in a bid to develop the subject of science throughout the school. But he added: “The main challenge for us is to create greater opportunities for our children to benefit from and encounter wildlife in our relatively urban setting. We want to them to be able to experience and see nature and wildlife without having to go on school trips and further afield. We want them to be able to observe it nearer to school on a daily basis.” Redrow's donation of bird and bat boxes proved timely.
Paul explained: “Last year we made some bug hotels and we have made a start on creating little gardens, space to

encourage wildlife to come here. The bird and bat boxes will really help to develop this.
“We have hatched chicks which the children have watched and raised, and they love it, they like to see it, and while they can see it on screen it is so much better to see things happening right in front of you.
“If we can attract birds and bats, then the pupils will be able to watch them every day, and get the charts out to see what they are, along with a host of other bird-watching tools. It will hopefully build interest for the children and may even encourage them to help wildlife at home too.”
Redrow marketing co-ordinator Rebecca Cliff, who's also a member of Redrow Yorkshire's sustainability team, went along to Grove Road Primary School to present the boxes and said: “To see the excitement and smiles on the faces of the children was lovely, and it's wonderful to be a part of such a special project at the school.
“We have long said at Redrow that we are about helping to create communities, not just homes, and to see those communities in action is amazing. This is about extending
the thought and care we put into our homes into the areas surrounding them, and it is a real privilege.”
Among the Redrow developments close by is Devonshire Gardens, off Claro Road, which is a stunning collection of three, four and five-bedroom properties in two different but beautiful styles.
While its Regent Collection evokes the classic Georgian style architecture of the Regency period, by contrast the Heritage Collection offers English craftsmanship inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th/early 20th century
But with both, buyers are greeted inside with chic interiors that are very firmly in the 21st century, boasting modern styling throughout, bright, open plan living spaces and contemporary appliances.
With current prices from £348,950 for four and five- bedroom homes, the properties and their location are ideal for families. For more information call 01423 582913 or go online at

According to Bellway, the falling cost of buying has led to soaring sales at a Leeds development during 2016. Paula Murdoch, Bellway Yorkshire's sales manager, said: “The cost of buying has fallen sharply in the last couple of years. This, combined with the Government's Help to Buy scheme, has had a major impact on new house sales. Developments like Parkside in Leeds have outperformed virtually every expectation we had for them.”
Recent figures released by New Homes Mortgage Helpline (NHMH) showed that monthly repayments on a £100,000, 80 per cent mortgage in 2014 were £461.31, whereas in 2016 they had fallen by over £50 per month to just £410.83.
A similar drop could be seen when looking at those using
to the Help to Buy scheme with 75 per cent mortgages dropping from £460.80 to £404.18. This is in addition to the fact buyers only need a five per cent deposit.
“The savings certainly make buying a more affordable option for many,” continued Paula. “And nowhere has this been more the case than at Parkside, where prices ranged from just £89,995 to £164,995, meaning they were well within reach of those previously may have seen renting as the only real option.”
Such has been the success of Parkside, the only properties now remaining at Parkside are five two bedroom Bardale apartments. Ranging in price from £89,995 to just £91,995, these fabulous new homes boast an open plan kitchen, dining and living area, as well
as two good sized bedrooms one single and one double , a stylish bathroom finished with a modern Roca suite, and two useful storage cupboards.
“They really are terrific apartments,” continued Paula. “They are spacious, stylishly designed and available at prices that no other housebuilder in Leeds can beat. Combine that with the falling cost of buying and it's perfectly reasonable to assume that if buyers don't act quickly they will miss out.”
