TERRORIST THREATS As the home of Britain’s financial services sector and numerous landmark buildings of national importance, the City of London has been a prime terrorist target for nearly 40 years. A great deal has been learned in that time to make the Square Mile one of the most secure locations in the country, yet the dangers remain real and ongoing.
Companies and organisations based in the City need to take protective measures now. This means assessing the level of risk to them and their staff according to where they are located - for example, in relation to access routes in and out of the City. Potentially vulnerable points such as delivery bays and post rooms should have watertight systems and procedures in place that track deliveries of large packages or goods and verify the identity of all delivery personnel. In some cases, installation of security gates and
protective barriers may be worth considering. Most important of all, companies risk their very survival if they fail to establish measures aimed at ensuring that business continues in the aftermath of an attack.
As the official guidance from Mi5 makes clear, businesses can reduce the risk to themselves, their employees and clients by remaining vigilant and staying security minded. Just a small investment in security measures helps to protect businesses against crime and make the work of terrorists more difficult. Neither should the value of individual watchfulness ever be underestimated: if you become aware of something suspicious, trust your instincts and report it to the police.
What might seem insignificant on its own could actually provide a vital link in a wider investigation.
All businesses in the City of London should take note of Project Griffin, which specifically targets the terrorist threat.
The Project Griffin Awareness Training Day covers such topics as the current threat level, hostile reconnaissance, and recognising the components of an explosive device and person/vehicle- borne devices.
