January 2017 Around Hampton Roads Millions spent to equip police

officers with body cameras Virginia Beach, Va. – Over $6 million will go towards making sure that all 450 Virginia Beach police officers are each supplied with a body camera. This plan will take place over the next few years to complete and is designed so that each year 100 officers receive their own body camera until it is completed in 2020.

Police Chief Jim Cervera said the biggest problem is how much money this will be costing the city because they are going to buy 450 cameras for each of the officers. The cameras are priced at $1,000 each and will need to be replaced about every three years. In addition, it will cost approximately $500,000 for storage of the video surveillance each year.

Surveillance will be saved for up to 60 days unless a part of a police investigation. Officers will be able to look over the footage, but it will be tamper-proof.

The first step of this process is said to begin this summer with 110 cameras being installed. Out of all the cities in the Hampton Roads area, Virginia Beach is the last one to put body cameras into effect.
