Winter Solstice Forecast

As we move towards the Winter Solstice it is time to take one final look backwards before we concentrate our attention on the future.

In order to understand why the Mayans chose 21st December, 2012 as the end date for their famous Long Count calendar it is helpful to use astrology, coupled with an understanding of their beliefs about 2012.

The Mayan community consisted of people who worked on the land, those with other specialist skills, a small number of nobility, shamans, priests, and a king. In order to maintain the confidence of his people the king meticulously recorded his achievements, inscribed on a public-displayed monument - a stelae. Also recorded publicly was the position that they were at in the Long Count calendar that commenced on 11th August, 3114 BC. The Long Count calendar was one of three calendars, two of which recorded shorter time cycles. All three calendars interlocked with each other to record each particular day, to which a particular god was ascribed.

The Mayans elaborately celebrated the end of the Long Count calendar that would occur in their future. They were tracking two extremely rare cycles that would culminate in 2012. The 25,920-year Precession of the Equinoxes cycle and the 5,125-year Great Cycle.

Modern astrology works with personal and earthly cycles. A Moon cycle is 28 1/2 days and the full moon coincides with a day of higher tides due to its gravitational pull. The 365-day sun cycle aligns with our calendar and we celebrate it as our birthday. A longer cycle is the 29-year Saturn cycle which coincides with our three stages of maturity - young person, adult and wise elder. The longest cycle we are aware of is a 284-year Pluto cycle. Pluto connecting to a personal planet in our birth chart usually has a very powerful effect that lasts a minimum of two years.
