Findhorn Flower Essences - March 2010 Newsletter

of all ages for a variety of problems such as fears, trauma, tantrums, low self esteem, homesickness, bullying, exam nerves and so on. Children respond wonderfully to flower essences and parents are often amazed by the positive effects they have on their children. Many children are not as emotionally and mentally ‘charged’ as adults, and the essences go ‘straight to the heart of the matter’ working quickly and effectively. Because, flower essences are natural and completely safe for babies and children, nothing will happen if you give your child the wrong essence.

How to take the essences: Flower essences are most commonly taken orally from the dropper. They can be added to drinking water, put into the bath water, or applied topically in cream or with a spray mister. Another method is to apply a few drops directly onto the forehead, behind the ears, and on the pulse points. A nursing baby will also get the benefit of flower essences through it’s mother’s milk.

How to make a ‘ready-to-take’ combination formula bottle: Add 2 or 3 drops of the chosen flower essences to a 30ml bottle that has been filled three quarters with pure water and one quarter with brandy. The usual recommended dosage is 7 drops 3 times a day. However, the number of drops can be reduced for babies (3 drops) and children under twelve years of age (5 drops). Children love to take charge of their own bottle, so if this is possible, give over control of taking flower essences to the child. Making a spray bottles works really well for this purpose.

Childhood Stress: Symptoms of stress in children are sometimes difficult to recognise. Watch out for behavioural changes such as acting out, mood swings, changes in sleep patterns, nightmares or bedwetting, and separation issues. Some children have trouble concentrating or doing their homework and overreact to minor problems. Younger children may react to stress by adopting new habits such as thumb sucking or hair twirling. When a child exhibits signs of stress, ensure they get proper rest and good nutrition. Naturally, good parenting during these times is essential, so give quality time to your children every day. Some level of stress is normal in life so let your child know it's OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings. Most families perfectly well with their children’s’ growing needs and challenges and with well-chosen flower essences, there’s usually no need to seek professional help. However, when any change in behaviour persists, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behaviour is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home you may need to consult an experienced flower essence therapist or other health care professional.
