ENEL OPENS HYDROPOWER

COMPLEX

Enel, through its renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Brasil Participações has opened the Apiacás hydropower complex. The new facility is located in the state of Mato Grosso in Brazil’s Central- West Region, 150 km from Alta Floresta.

“The inauguration of Apiacás is an important achievement for Enel in Brazil, as we followed the highest sustainability and environmental standards for its construction and we were able to complete the facility well in advance of the original deadline,” Enel`s Country Manager in Brazil Carlo Zorzoli, tells APN. “Apiacás shows how to best use Brazil’s hydro resources while contribut- ing to both the sustain -ability of the country’s energy mix and the key development of local communities.”

PSEG SOLAR SOURCE

ACQUIRES KEY FACILITY

The complex, which is owned by three special purpose vehicles (SPVs) held by EGPB, has a total installed capacity of 102 MW and is composed of three power plants: Salto Apiacás (45 MW), Cabeça de Boi (30 MW) and Fazenda (27 MW).

Apiacás is able to generate more than 490 GWh per year, enough to meet the annual energy consumption needs of more than 200,000 Brazilian households, while avoiding the emission of about 280,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere. Enel invested approxi- mately US$287 million in the construction of Apiacás, an investment financed through the Group’s own sources. The facility is supported by a 30-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for the sale of a fixed amount of power generated by the three hydro plants to a pool of distribution companies operating in the Brazilian regulated market.

PSEG Solar Source has acquired a 6.6 MW-dc solar energy facility from BayWa r.e. Solar Projects repre- senting an investment of US$12.2 million. The PSEG Hemlock Solar Energy Center is under construc- tion and scheduled to begin operations in the New Year. The PSEG Hemlock Solar Energy Center has a 15- year power purchase agreement with Virginia Electric and Power Co. The facility occupies 48 acres that are under a 35-year lease with a private landowner and is located in Northampton County, N.C., about 90 miles northeast of Raleigh. "We are very pleased to team up with BayWa r.e. on this project, which will bring more clean energy resources to the region of North Carolina," said Diana Drysdale, president of PSEG Solar Source. "This new acquisition represents another milestone in grow- ing our business and illus- trates PSEG's commitment to providing a sustainable energy future." BayWa r.e. is the engi- neering, procurement and construction contractor and will operate the project for PSEG Solar Source upon completion.

What has been described as ‘North America’s largest & most powerful tidal turbine’, the new OpenHydro 2MW machine, is now lighting up homes in Nova Scotia after recently being successfully connected to the grid.

The facility will use approx- imately 20,500 poly-crys- talline Trina Solar panels with SMA inverters. "BayWa r.e. is excited to have partnered with PSEG in the continuing transfor- mation to a greener and lower cost grid," said Jam Attari, CEO of BayWa r.e. Solar Projects. "This world class facility could not have been completed without full and tireless support and key involvement from the Northhampton County community and for our partners."

Cape Sharp Tidal - a joint ven- ture between Emera and OpenHydro, a DCNS company - deployed the Open-Centre Turbine on November 7th at the Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) in just two hours. Twenty-four hours after deployment, the project’s marine operations team safely connected the turbine’s subsea cable with the FORCE subsea cable, which connects to the onshore sub-station. Chairman of OpenHydro Thierry Kalanquin said: “This is a huge achievement for Cape Sharp Tidal, a company combining DCNS, OpenHydro and our partners Emera. Last week, the Open-Centre Turbine supported the most powerful tidal stream of the year without any stress to the system. The successful deliv- ery of this turbine, the most powerful in north America, also represents a significant milestone for the global tidal industry.

“When it is joined by a second device in 2017, Cape Sharp Tidal will be one of the largest generating, in-stream tidal energy arrays anywhere in the world,” he said.
