18 | VB 10,000 – ALL ABOUT THE ROPES Versabar’s VB 10,000 employs nearly 70,000 feet of wire rope spooled on 28 winches to perform truly remarkable feats. By assembling common components in a unique manner, they have engineered a vessel with capabilities like no other. Te catamaran-based concept provides enhanced stability, level lifting and a relatively shallow 12.5-foot draft. Tat lets Versabar put the ropes to work on inland waters where conventional mono-hulled derrick barges can’t go, and tackle massive jobs offshore with unmatched speed and efficiency.
23 | VIRTUAL REALITY GAINS REAL TRACTION
Long considered an exotic or relatively pointless technology for crane operators even as it gained ground in a variety of consumer applications, Virtual Reality is set to change the game in crane operator training. Pioneering firms like Industrial Training International and Mammoet are taking steps to bring a virtual training environment to the user rather than the other way around – and at in a cost-effective way.

ON THE COVER: Using its DP3 system, Versabar’s VB 10,000 maneuvers over the first of three decommissioned topsides which it removed during a 30-hour span earlier this summer in the Gulf of Mexico. In the course of the entire project, the company decommissioned a field of four topsides in addition to their jackets. Their engineers determined optimum methods to perform a total of thirteen lifts with the VB 10,000 that added up to an aggregate weight of more than 11,000 tons.
