[EDITOR’S NOTE]

As the year is winding down, many things compete for our attention. We have to close out the year with a strong finish, and prepare for the holiday season as well. On top of that, you’ve got to get plans in place for 2017. It’s easy to let the planning get lost in that shuffle, but as baseball manager Branch Rickey pointed out, “Luck is the residue of design.” Good planning now can make good “luck” in the new year, or anytime in the future. Looking back, we

certainly saw that at work in the 2016 World Series, where two teams not exactly famous for their luck put plans in place that brought them both together in an epic showdown. In this issue, we’ll look at several people and companies who have put great plans to

work, and others planning for something big in the future. Seven years ago, Versabar launched the result of their extensive planning for a better

offshore Heavy Lifting System, the VB 10,000. We’ll follow a multi-phase operation to decommission a field of four topsides and their jackets, showing how all of the capability inherent in this vessel’s design proves its value in action. We’ll look back at the remarkable career of Nik Wallenda, and learn about his passion for planning the rigging that makes his showmanship possible. And we’ll meet the innovators from Industrial Training International (ITI) and Mammoet who are planning for a future where training a crane operator gets real – or a lot closer to it – much faster. Finally, we’ll help you plan your year with a look at the must-attend events of 2017,

where they are, what they’re about, and who you might expect to see there. Tese events feature a wide range of educational content from industry experts, exhibits and product demonstrations, and key networking opportunities to help shape your plans even beyond 2017. What does your company have planned for the coming year? We heard about a

few of the things you’ll be working on next year at the recent AWRF General Meeting in Toronto. And by the time you read this we’ll have heard from many more of you at LiftEx2016 in Aberdeen. If you’ve got something planned, and you think it might make a good story for Wire Rope Exchange, please let us know! We’d love to showcase your work in an upcoming issue. If you have comments about anything you read here, we’re always listening so send us a note or give us a call. And we thank you for your continued readership and support. Happy holidays to you and yours, and here’s wishing you the best of “luck” in 2017!

Best Regards,
