Security officers help to keep streets safer

THEY might look slightly sinister with their dark uniforms under night-time urban street-lighting, but these are actually the good guys of Maidstone. Out on patrol over the Halloween

weekend – when the pubs and clubs are full of revellers – these town centre marshalswere part of a trial scheme to help manage the night-time economy. Provided by Maidstone-based

TMS Protection, four operatives were out and about to support the services already on offer by Urban Blue and the Street Pastors. According to One Maidstone, the

town centre business partnership scheme, the TMS staffers were there to act as ambassadors for the county town and to add back-up, should the police require it. Now a study is being conducted

to evaluate whether the scheme can be made to work more regularly after its successful try-out. One Maidstone spokesman Ilsa

Butler said: “Halloween weekend, traditionally one of the busiest in the pubbing and clubbing calendar,

saw a trial of a new scheme to fur- ther cement the successful partner- ship approach that Maidstone takes to managing the night time econ- omy.

“Four town centre marshals sup-

plied by TMSProtection took to the streets to support the existing serv- ices delivered by Urban Blue and the Street Pastors, to act as ambas- sadors for the town and to provide assistance to the police where ap- propriate. “The trial was seen as very posi-

tive and the marshals’ friendly but vigilant approach lent an addi- tional level of security to the volun- teers working in the town and, of course, to the night economy cus- tomers themselves. “Research will now be under-

taken by participating agencies, MaidSafe, the town’s crime reduc- tion partnership and the police, to ascertain the viability of the scheme on a more regular footing. “This project is in addition to the regular Police work that covers the night economy and supports all agencies.”
