Medway towpath to be closed for £2.7m work

WORK has begun on a £2.7m scheme to improve the six-and-a- half mile stretch of towpath along- side the River Medway between Barming and Aylesford. The section between South Street, Barming and Unicumbes Lane, Fant, will remain closed for more than four months after work got underway on Monday, October 31. Kent County Council (KCC) says

the scheme will include repairs to eroded areas of river bank, planting of riverbank trees and plants to pre- vent further erosion and replace- ment of benches. The riverside path will be widened and upgraded with an all- weather surface and fixed stand cycle repair stations to make it eas- ier for an increasing number of cy- clists. There will also be new signs and improved access for disabled users. New parking facilities will be provided at Lockmeadow and the Museum of Kent Life. The route from Lockmeadow

will be closed from mid-January, meaning the four-mile stretch to Barming will not be in use for two

months. The towpath through Maidstone will not be closed. The stretch of towpath between

the M20 overbridge and Forstal in- dustrial estate at Aylesford closed in October and will be inaccessible until next March. The rest of the path between the Aylesford Bailey bridge and the M20 overbridge has been closed for a number of years, but will re-open in April 2017 when the project is officially opened. The list of closures also includes the stretch from Allington Castle to

the Malta Inn from November 23 until December 23. Elsewhere, the Environment Agency is carrying out £3m worth of work on East Far- leigh Lock. The six-month scheme involves intermittent closures of footpaths. A KCCstatement said: “The proj-

ect is designed to accommodate the increasing use of cyclists along this route. It includes the provision of a sustainable all-weather surface along the river bank aswell as eco- logical restoration.”
