Hampton Arts announces Holiday Tree Ornament Contest winner

of Hampton will be represented this holiday

Hampton, VA – The City season at

Virginia’s Executive Mansion, home to the Commonwealth’s governors since 1813, the only governor’s residence in the country still used for its original purpose.

Mariela Freire Haga of

Hampton is the First Place winner of the 2016 Holiday Tree Ornament Contest sponsored by Hampton Arts. Ms. Haga’s winning entry, “Azule,”

features the famous Hampton icon,

most the

Blue Crab. The work’s title, “Azule,” is Spanish for blue and reflects the artist’s Hispanic heritage. Created with a sand dollar base, nail polish, color pencils, wire and mixed media, the ornament is a joyful interpretation of the season and offers a whimsical take on Hampton’s coastal presence.

“Azule” will represent the City of

Hampton along with other ornaments from across the state on the Holiday Tree at the Executive Mansion during the upcoming holiday season. A panel of judges selected the award winning ornament.

Ms. Haga is a Hampton Arts

League member and studies painting at The Charles H. Taylor Arts Center (CHTAC). She will be exhibiting in the upcoming “Small Works and Miniatures by Tidewater

Artists”

exhibition at the center December 10 through January 22.

“We’re thrilled that the City of

Hampton will have such a hometown presence this holiday season at the Executive Mansion,” said Hampton Arts

Artistic Parison, Director Richard M. Jr. “Ms. Haga’s ornament

represents a long tradition of visual arts and craftsmanship in Hampton as exemplified by our very own Charles H. Taylor Arts Center.”

artistic

“Hampton has a rich cultural and heritage, both of which are

highlighted in the winning ornament,” said City Manager Mary Bunting. “We are pleased to see that represented so well in the Governor’s initiative to highlight Virginia localities.”
