at fi rst his father was against racing. Ste- vie said, “He was on me when I was fi rst starting to race with the boat back in the late 80s. He said you are going to screw something up and you’ve got to go haul. I had a couple of choice words, but he left us alone. A few years later I was getting stuff ready to go racing and he said who’s racing with you? I said you are if you want to. He shut right up and never said another word and he went and got everything. I told my brothers I should’ve told him that years ago as that would’ve saved me a lot of arguing with him. Once he went, not another word was said about racing.” Stevie started fi shing out of an outboard
boat hauling by hand when he was 13. He used her for a couple of years before switch- ing to a 20-foot Eastporter with a cabin and a winch head hooked up to a Briggs & Stratton engine. In 1983, he bought LITTLE DIRLS, built by Alvin Beal of Beals Island in 1965, from a fi sherman over in Addison. She had a spray hood, straight drive and tiller ropes. He used her until 1999 when he launched BIGGER DIRLS. He still owns her, but now she is falling apart. He said he had a choice to make saying, “fi x up an old wooden boat and have nothing but an old wooden boat or buy 60 acres of land in the middle of town and I think I made the right choice.” Now Stevie is in ANGELENA, the

oldest fi berglass boat in the two towns. Her engine fi red right up the other morning and he brought her into the wharf and grounded her out. He is now working through all the systems to make sure everything is working properly. He did fi nd a problem with the

power steering, which turned like there was no power steering. He fi gures in a couple of days he will back fi shing. “We are lucky we live where we live
with all of the shit that is going on in this world,” said Stevie. “It is humbling, it is very heartwarming to know that people care that much about you. I don’t know how to say thank you enough for what they are trying to do for me.” There is nothing like Downeast Maine,
especially the fi shing communities, that come together to help someone that is having a trying time. Unfortunately many of the towns to the west’ard have lost this trait.
