From the Director – As the fall begins, I compare it with
school starting. We are able to spend time with our children and grandchildren during the summer, although work still goes on. I was pleased to be able to bring my grandchildren to a few meetings over the summer! We are always proud to introduce them to our industry and have a chance to show them “what we do.” My brother and I never had many
babysitters (mostly grandparents) when our folks were working. We were very fortunate to be right there with them as much as possible, as I’m sure most of us grew up that way. We learned to caulk, sand, paint, and as time went on, to varnish. Our generation grew up on the boat, learned how to push up and down the bilge pump which was not automatic then. That showed a lot of dedication during a rainy week! There were a bunch of us that were the “tugboat kids” which was great! Dad would let me pull the “big horn” each time that we came into the harbor. I felt so special when he let me do that!
So involving our next generation with
our work ethic is not such a bad thing. When I had the kids this summer, I didn’t always fi nd something entertaining for them while I had meetings to attend. I took them along and taught them in the process. Now that we are into September, school
has started and so has our meeting schedules. We have already had our Fishermen’s Forum Board meeting and our DELA Annual Meeting. The Zones are meeting once again, with changes being made with our waiting list and zone closures. Zone C has voted to close, fi rst time in ten years. Our Annual Meeting was held on Thursday, September 15th
with
Commissioner Pat Keliher and Sarah Cotnoir as our guests. They updated us on the Licensing changes, the hearing that was held concerning the Penobscot River Closing, bait issues and double tagging. The election of offi cers was held with
President, Hilton Turner presiding. The results for 2016 – 2017 went as follows:

President, Hilton Turner; Vice President, Robert Fortin; Secretary/Treasurer, Mike Dassatt; Executive Director, Sheila Dassatt. I have enclosed an updated list of our Board of Directors with two vacant seats open. If you are interested in helping us to make a diff erence with our industry, please contact us at
dassatt711@yahoo.com or
downeastlobstermen.org. We welcome you aboard! My folks always told us kids, not to sit
and complain about an issue, get involved! It is the only way to come up with compromise and solutions to our problems. We would like to “Thank” our Associate
members and directors that donated items to our hat drawing. This is a fun way to get our Associate members recognized and keep their name out and about. We couldn’t do it without our Associate members and Avid supporters! One attention getter from our meeting
was when the Commissioner asked about pig hide for bait. It was announced and discussed at our meeting with great concern. We did say that we would put the word out to help the fi shermen understand why they may be boarded by the Marine Patrol. The way it was discussed at our meeting was basically “clean” hide is not as much of a problem as the hide that wasn’t treated or at least salted and has big wads of fat or rendering on it. “It is not illegal until it is in the trap.” We had a lot of feedback on this
announcement with our reply that we are the messenger and simply getting the word out as a help to the industry. At this time, I believe the hide is being tested for pathogens and safety in using this product. We will let you know as we learn more about it. There are alternative baits that are rendered safe to use as they are biodegradable and tested by

the DMR’s speculations. Perhaps we can all work together on this in order to help the dealer’s as well. Again, please stay in touch. We are also staying on tap with the
National Marine Monument that will close fi shing grounds off the Gulf of Maine and Massachusetts. DELA has joined with the associations in opposing this closure. Beth Casoni of the Massachusetts Lobstermen’s Association has written an extensive letter to President Obama with the industry signing the letter with her. We are prepared to help in any way that we can with this situation. This is all in an eff ort to protect coral on the ocean bottom. Whales, coral, fl oat rope, seems that the fi shermen are once again the “endangered species!”
DELA would like to extend our sincere
condolences to our Director, Walter Day of Vinalhaven during the passing of his wife, Lois. Lois was always there when I needed her and Walt with fi shery issues. She will be greatly missed. We also extend our sincere condolences to the family of William “Killer” Smith of West Jonesport. He passed suddenly last week. He is another fi sherman that has been with our generation a long time and will be missed. Time changes everything…so suddenly. We were also saddened to see that
Stevie Carver’s boat, F/V Little Dirls burned at the mooring. The pictures were such a sad sight to see. We voted to send a donation to Stevie through the benefi t supper that was held at the Jonesport Fire Department.

Every little bit helps, for sure. We went to the supper with family, Glenn and Cathy. We were overwhelmed at all of the love and support that was there! It was defi nitely heartwarming to see such reach out to help a fellow fi sherman. Stevie was right there to “Thank” each and every one of us. Good luck and best wishes with your recovery eff ort. Vice President, Bob Fortin will be
back on the water soon, too…he had some hard luck with his boat, F/V Patriot and has also lost a season this year. Mike and I are working on our boat at this time and making good progress. We are hoping and praying that this coming season, we will all be in the water again, moving in a positive direction. Please stay in touch, we are happy to
hear from each and every one. Think about membership if you haven’t joined DELA yet. Each member counts! See ya around, Sheila
