Heeeere Chickee, Chickee Costco to build and operate chicken processing plant in Fremont

Look out beef. Here comes poultry. In July, the Fremont City Council
approved, by a 7-0 vote, annexation and rezoning measures that paved the way for Costco Wholesale Corp. to build a chicken processing plant. Te $300 million plant, which will be built
on the town’s south side, is projected to begin processing chickens in August, 2018. It will employ 800-1,000 and inject $1.2 million a year into the local economy. Te processing plant is actually a
partnership between Costco, the largest membership-only warehouse club in the United States, and Georgia-based Lincoln Premium Poultry LLC. “We’re on the cusp of a really exciting
chapter of growth for this region,” said Cecilia Harry, executive director of the Greater

Fremont Development Council. City Councilman Larry Johnson said the
Costco plant was a “much-needed shot in the arm” for the city, and Harry agreed, but from a bigger picture standpoint it also provides a foothold for the poultry industry in a state known as a major supplier of beef and pork. “Tey were really excited about coming
to a state where they could be pioneers in the industry,” Harry said.

discussions with Costco was making it clear and ensuring that there be a grower network of local farmers. Harry said a group of between 75-100 farmers in an 11-county area will supply chickens for the plant, enhancing economic opportunities for local poultry farmers.
