Don’t Move... Improve!

Your toughest competitors are continuously growing, upgrading and renovating. Don’t be left behind! Here’s an overview of renos recently completed at three forward- thinking clubs. BY BARB GORMLEY

MEGA

Club: Club Sportif MAA, Montreal (www.clubsportifmaa.com) Project manager: Pierre Blanchet, president-general manager Cost: $1.8 million Timeline: 6 months Outcome: bright and spacious

Fitness Business Canada: What changes did you make to your club? Pierre Blanchet: Last year we re- moved two double squash courts (with 24-foot ceilings) to increase our fit- ness centre from 6,000 sq. ft. to over

22 Fitness Business Canada September/October 2016

9,000 sq. ft. We now have a spacious free weights section, a quiet stretch- ing area and a mezzanine that is used as a multi-function workout area. The entire space has new lighting, natural light through the addition of windows

and all new equipment. As well, our 11,000 sq. ft. multisport

gym received new lighting, improved ventilation, a wooden ceiling, and floors redone to accommodate three badminton courts, a basketball court and a volleyball court. One of the squash courts in the area now has a moveable wall that allows it to be con- verted to international doubles size.

FBC: What prompted this project? PB: Our club dates back to 1905 and has a rich history. It’s 90,000 sq. ft. of old and big. We wanted to modernize it, especially the mechanical and elec- tric, and to make more-efficient use of the space. In the next five years we plan to spend $6-7 million in four or five phases. Not all of our spaces have ventilation, air conditioning or natu- ral light, and we have continuous wa- ter leaks and pipe bursts. Some of our light fixtures dated back to the 1930s. In this business you can’t sit back

and relax, or someone else will come along and offer something better. You constantly need to re-invest in your building and programs to stay com- petitive and ahead of the game.

FBC: How did you continue to oper- ate during the reno? PB: We’re lucky to have a lot of swing
