BOOTHBAY HARBOR-ROCKLAND – There has been a lot of talk up and down the coast the last few months regarding some new boats that had been built, some older boats that were repowered, and news that the Canadians were coming over to put on a show. All the speculation and rumours were about to be answered as the fi rst two lobster boat races of the season were held at Boothbay Harbor on 18 June and Rockland the following day. On Friday, I arrived at the Tugboat
Inn in Boothbay mid-afternoon and looked across to Brown’s Wharf to see who had already arrived. At 1700 I walked across the harbor to see what was going on and the fi rst news I was greeted with was that Steve Johnson’s new boat [Repco 30, 1,100-hp gasoline engine] had transmission issues and they left her home. Then I met Winifred Alley and Steve Carver and their crew from Jonesport. Steve had brought his BIGGER DIRLS [Holland 32, 400-hp John Deere], but Winifred had a new racer, LAST DESIGN. She was the last hull Ernest Libby Jr., of Beals Island was working on before he passed away several years ago. She is 31 feet long and powered with a 300-hp Caterpillar. Another boat we had been hearing
about was MARGARET E., which had been purchased over the winter by Patrick Faulkingham of Winter Harbor and repowered with a 570-hp FPT diesel by Kennedy Marine Engineering. This is
a similar to the engine Roger Kennedy was running in WHISKEY-TANGO- FOXTROT, so we all knew she was going to have some serious power. On the dock was: Billy Bob Faulking-
ham’s 51 [Osmond 40, 700-hp FPT]; Keith Jordan’s BAILEY & BELLA [Calvin Beal 44, 1,000 hp Caterpillar]; Randy Durkee’s BLACK DIAMOND [Holland 32, 454 Chevrolet]; Travis Otis’ FIRST TEAM [Northern Bay 36; Zach Donnell’s HAPPY HOUR [Mitchell Cove 35; 500-hp John Deere]; Steve Johnson’s LYNN MARIE [Jingle Johnson 28; 230-hp Isuzu]; Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE [Mitchell Cove 32, 1,000-hp Caterpillar]; Vance Bunker’s SARI ANN [42’Johns Bay Boat; 660- hp Volvo]; 410-hp Sisu 645]; and Todd Ritchie’s SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34; 436- hp Sisu]. Then it was learned that Shawn Alley’s
LITTLE GIRLS [28’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 514 Ford] was going to be a no show. They had been doing some sea trials at Searsport when the engine developed a major issue, which claimed the cam-shaft and more.

new boat [Northern Bay 36; 1,000-hp Caterpillar] was not coming as they needed a wire harness for the engine. On race day everyone was expecting
