racing held their fi rst two races of the season on 18 and 19 June. It was a little anti-climatic with all the broken boats and one can only hope they are on the mend and will be out to put on a show either at Bass Harbor or Moosabec Reach. Just before these races were held it was

learned that the City of Rockland in their infi nite wisdom decided to charge the boats coming to race $2.50 a foot. That meant it would cost a 30-footer $75 to come and put on a show. The day before the races Journey’s End Marina off ered a racer a slip for $30, which many of the fi shermen took advantage of. I also heard that the town did back off , but not sure what the particulars were.

something, but gouging them after they spend hundred dollars in fuel to get there turned some of them off . At Boothbay they tie up to Brown’s Wharf, where some have rooms for the night, eat their meals and have something a little more potent than a soda at the bar. In fact, there is no other town on the circuit that has ever charged the fi shermen for spending the night before or after a racing event. Most understand that the fi shermen come and support the town by spending their money there during the race. If they have a real good time, one can bet they come back during the off -season to visit friends and spend more money in the town. Rockland has proven that it is run by
people who are anencephalic, who think that the raking of people over the coals for every little thing they do is a good idea. I do not know all the gory details, but in their myo-
pic view they are now charging the Lobster Festival people to host their event there. I think this falls under the classifi cation of biting the hand that feeds you. The Festival organizers have always assisted the town in many ways, including purchasing a fi re truck several years ago. They are also the ones that assisted in having the waterfront where the festival is held cleaned up. If I was the lobster festival organizer I would be looking for a new location and long gone before the next event was to be held. Another interesting thing I noticed the
weekend I spent in Boothbay for the races was that many of the businesses have to hire foreign help. My wife and I had dinner at the Tugboat Inn like we have done for years and we were waited on by a very nice girl from Lithuania. I asked if she was here for school and she said no just for the summer to work at the restaurant. I am glad that she and others like her get the opportunity to come here and experience America, but why do many of these establishments have to rely on foreign help? My brother-in-law, who is a farmer, had to bring in foreign help because he can- not fi nd anyone who wants to work in the fi elds. Are Americans that lazy? Yes I know the answer, but something needs to be done to correct the problem. Starvation worked as a great incentive for many years and I bet if we brought it back it would instill a lot of motivation. It is easy to do – just eliminate the hand-outs and parents stop giving those rug-rats everything they want and making them feel like they are privileged. Employ- ers are completely turned off by many of the young workers of America, and justifi ably so, it needs to change before it is too late.
