in 1986 and powered with a 375-hp John Deere; Mark Davis’ WHISKEY GIRL, a BHM 25 powered with a 300-hp Chevrolet; Tony Hooper’s 35-foot LIBERTY, which is thought to have been built by Ernest Libby, Jr. of Beals Island in 1972. What a gorgeous day for racing with
bright sunshine and nice sea breeze keeping those on the water nice a cool. First up were the three Work Boat
classes. In Class A there was just one entrant, Cameron Murphy’s NUGGET [Holland 14; 30-hp]. In CLASS B (Inboards, outboards or outdrives, 31 to 90 hp) Frank Bennett brought up his Naden 16 with a 60-hp Suzuki all the way from Newbury, MA to race. He faced off against ZIPPIN [Corson 14, 60-hp Johnson] from Harpswell and just did not have enough to get by and settled for second. Dave Johnston’s CASCO MISS [Eastern 22, 130-hp Honda] has always been one of the top boats in Class C and today was now diff erent as she slowly edged ahead of her competition for the win. Second went to Edward Apon’s MISS KYLIE [Mirachi; 225-hp Yamaha]. There were three entrants in the fi ve
Gasoline Classes with no entrants in Class A and Class E. Each entrant was in their own class so they were all run up the course at the same time. Mark Davis’ WHISKEY GIRL [BHM 25; 350 300 hp Chevrolet] took Class B; BLACK DIAMOND Class C; and Bruce Engert’s THUNDERBOLT [South Shore 30; 621 Chevrolet] in Class D. Four boats came to the line for the
Fastest Working Lobster Boat – Boothbay and this was won by Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 36, 650- hp Scania], followed by John Albaum’s WOUND UP [36 Crowley, 450-hp Scania]. The only entrant in Wooden Boat Race
(A), was Ed Glover’s GRACIE [33’; 160- hp John Deere]. There were four entrants in Wooden Boat Race (B) and it was a battle of the Dugas brothers. Scott Dugas’ SAND DOLLARS III [41’Johns Bay Boat; 700-hp Caterpillar] took fi rst, with Alan Dugas’ DELUSIONAL [38’ John’s Bay Boat, 600- hp Cummins] second. In the fi rst diesel race of the day, Class A
there was just one entrant, LYNN MARIE, In Class B GRACIE took fi rst followed by Nick Thibault’s SANDRA ANN [Young Brothers 33; 210-hp Cummins]. The next race, Class C had LAST DESIGN, but she did not have anyone else in her class, so race offi cials had her ran down with Class D and Class E, which also only had one entrant Justin Papkee’s PULL N’ PRAY [Repco 37; 300- hp Caterpillar] in D and. BIGGER DIRLS in E. This was a great race as LAST DESIGN and BIGGER DIRLS came up the course bow to bow, but at the line it was BIGGER DIRLS by half a boat length The only entrant in Class F was Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE [Mitchell Cove 35; 410-hp Sisu] so she was run down the course with the two entrants in Class G SEACOCK and HAPPY HOUR. This turned out to be a real close battle with MS. ROSE sneaking into the lead followed by SEACOCK and then HAPPY HOUR. In Class H FIRST TEAM had a tough battle with Nick Martinez’ PRETTY WOMAN [Calvin Beal 36; 510-hp Caterpillar], but slowly FIRST TEAM slipped out front. A lot of attention was paid to the next race as it would be the fi rst time we got to see MARGARET E. run and she had some stiff competition, Chris Smith’s MISTY [Crowley Beal 33; 650 hp Scania] and Scott Woods’ WILD ONE [Crowley/Beal 33; 892-GM]. When the fl ag dropped on the start boat MARGARET E. took off and never looked back winning by more than seven boat lengths. In Diesel Class J BLUE EYED GIRL bested DELUSIONAL. The next race,
Class K saw Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE [Libby 34; 690-hp FTP] slide by ALL OUT for the win. Last fall we knew that Cameron Crawford and his father Glenn had found more speed in WILD WILD WESTand she now faced off against MISS KARLEE in Class L. Right at the start she jumped into the lead and went on for the win. There were no entrants in Class M(A), but there were three entrants in Class M(B). The winning boat was 51, followed by Cyrus Sleeper’s CENTERFOLD [Mussel Ridge 42, 750-hp John Deere]. The fi nal Diesel Class race, N pitted Andy Johnson’s WHISTLIN’ DIXIE [Holland 40; 1,000-hp Caterpillar] against the new boat JACALWA. WHISTLIN’ DIXIE has been the dominate boat in this class for a number of years and today was no diff erent. Only one boat, BLACK DIAMOND,
came to the line for the Gasoline Free-for- All. The question was, what happened to THUNDERBOLT? It was later learned they developed an issue with her starter and were done for the day. Ten boats came to the line for the Diesel
Free-for-All and the winner was WILD WILD WEST with a speed of 54.6 mph. The fi nal race of the day, Fastest Lobster
Boat, had just two boats on the line, WILD WILD WEST and WHISTLIN’ DIXIE, which was again won by WILD WILD WEST. The next day racers awoke to a bright
sunny day in Rockland, but the wind was blowing over 20 knots out of the sou’west. Sign-ups were held at Journey’s End
Bait and when all was said and done 53 boats were entered. We know Wes Shute was getting
DAYDREAMER [South Shore 30] ready this season, and had switched out a big gas engine for a 454 Chevrolet and would be competing in Gasoline Class C against BLACK DIAMOND. Other boats that we had not seen before
included: David Ames II’s RENEGADE, a Mussel Ridge 42 powered with a 750-hp John Deere; Geoffrey Barrett’s LONG FACES was a new, an Osmond 38 powered with a 800-hp Caterpillar; John L. Bickford, Jr.’s FRANCISCO LABON is a Mussel Ridge 42 powered with a 750-hp John Deere; Julie Eaton’s CAT SASS is a Crowley 28 powered with a 305-hp Cummins; Murray Thompson from Vinalhaven brought his Duffy 42 SUNDAY MONEY, powered with a 1,000- hp Caterpillar; Alex Curtis’ LAURA S., a T. Jason 28 powered with a 355-hp Cummins; Robert Curtis’ KARMA is a JC 27 powered with a 230-hp Volvo; Deven Haskell of North Haven has a new HOOLIGAN, which is a Young Brothers 38, the fi rst model they off ered and known as the “Slippery 38,” powered with a 375-hp Cummins; and a new QUICK STEP, owned by Kevin Glover, which is a Holland 38 powered with a 450-hp Detroit. The fi rst three races were the Work
Boat Classes. There were no entrants in Class A, but two came to the line for Class B. Conditions were a little wild with the wind coming diagonally across the course with waves about two feet in height and NUGGET was taking a beating with spray completely engulfi ng her at times, but at the line she grabbed the win. There were three boats in Class C and again the spray was fl ying. Joshua Conover’s MITCH [Mitchell Cove 20; 150-hp Yamaha] took the win with CASCO MISS second. In the Gasoline Classes there were
four entrants with no one in Class A and E. In Class B it was just Wayne Rich’s WIDE OPEN [26’ Robert Rich; 350 Chevrolet]; Class C, DAYDREAMER
Winifred Alley's LAST DESIGN blasting through a wave on her way to hersecond win.
and BLACK DIAMOND; and in Class D THUNDERBOLT was up and running. Again they were all going to be run together with the only class unknown was the race between DAYDREAMER and BLACK DIAMOND. The wind played havoc bouncing the boats around, but at the line DAYDREAMER took the win with BLACK DIAMOND back by two boat lengths. In the fi rst diesel race, Class A, LYNN
MARIE had little trouble getting up the course. In Class B GRACIE continued her winning ways. Class C was going to be interesting as LAST DESIGN would face off against CAT SASS. LAST DESIGN was bounced around a little, but she still got the win. The only entrant in Class D was PULL ‘N PRAY and she went up the course by herself. Class E had four entrants and it was going to be an extremely close fi nish with the win going to Sid Eaton’s KIMBERLY BELLE [AJ-28; 370-hp Volvo] followed by BIGGER DIRLS and Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE [Holland 31; 355-hp. Cummins] with all three bows within half a boat length of each other. MS. ROSE had no trouble winning Class F. At Boothbay the win in Class G went to SEACOCK with HAPPY HOUR second, but at Rockland HAPPY HOUR bested SEACOCK. In Class H FIRST TEAM kept out in front for the win with Kevin Glover’s QUICKSTEP [Holland 38; 450-hp Detroit] second. Class I had the same entrants as at Boothbay MARGARET E., MISTY and WILD ONE and they fi nished in this order. In Class J we were going to see GLADIATOR in her fi rst race and she continued her winning ways with a win over Carl Gross’ HEY BABY [Northern
---
Bay 36; 610-hp Volvo]. Some of the best races last year were between Jeff Eaton’s LA BELLA VITA [Northern Bay 38; 750- hp FPT] and LISA MARIE and they were ready to face off for the fi rst time this year. As they came up the course it was close, but at the line it was LA BELLA VITA by a boat length. In Class L two entrants were signed up, MISS KARLEE and WILD WILD WEST, but just MISS KARLEE came to the line. There were two boats on the line for Class M(A) and Alan Knowlton’s SEA URCHIN [Young Brothers 45, 375-hp John Deere] got the win. 51 had a little more competition in Class M(B) this day, but still head them off for the win with Travis Doughty’s CHELSEY ANN BRIELLA [Libby 41, 750-hp FPT] a close second. WHISTLIN’S DIXIE was looking for his second win in Class N for the weekend and did so with Murray Thompson’s SUNDAY MONEY second. Just two boats were on the line for
the Gasoline Free-for-All and BLACK DIAMOND took the win. Just six boats entered the Diesel Free-
for-All and it was no surprise as WHISTLIN’ DIXIE lead the way up the course. In the Wooden Boat Race A, WIDE
OPEN was able to get by GRACIE for the win. There were no entrants in the Wooden Boat Race B. In the last race of the day, four boats
came to the line, but it was no surprise again when WHISTLIN’ DIXIE led all challengers up the course. With two races down, it is now onto
Bass Harbor on 26 June and Moosabec Reach on 2 July.
