Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2016 Welcome to Edinburgh
With thousands of shows and hundreds of venues, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest arts festival on Earth, an inspiring celebration of the best performance and entertainment from every part of our planet. So whether you’re a seasoned Fringe visitor or performer or this is your first experience of the Fringe, there is always a fair bit of planning required to make the most of what’s on offer.
The Fringe Society is here to help you plan your trip and get around. There’s loads of information in this programme and on
edfringe.com, including maps of all venues. You can easily search and book tickets to every show on the Fringe at
edfringe.com or, from July, via the official app for iPhone and Android and then pick your tickets up at one of our collection points situated all over the city. Or pop into our Box Office or pick up the phone and we’ll help you in person. The Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society, a registered charity, works year round to develop and improve our services to make sure the world’s largest arts festival is an all-round better experience each time you visit.
Getting Here
The journey to Edinburgh is part of the fun. Whether travelling by rail or road, via the Highlands or the Borders, the landscape is spectacularly breathtaking.
Your travel to Edinburgh has an impact on the environment and flying from cities in the UK can take as long as travelling by train when you consider check-in times, why not consider coming by train or bus.
Train
If you’re travelling from London, the Caledonian Sleeper, an overnight train from London Euston, will get you to Edinburgh first thing in the morning ready for a full day of Fringe fun. If you’re more local, ScotRail (
scotrail.co.uk) has an extensive network of routes to Edinburgh from all over Scotland and provides a range of travel options and offers throughout August.
Bus
Scottish Citylink (
citylink.co.uk), Megabus (
uk.megabus.com) and Stagecoach (
stagecoachbus.com) all have a variety of coach services to Edinburgh from destinations across Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Car
If you are bringing your own car, please be aware that Edinburgh has limited parking and strict restrictions in place.
Air
If you’re travelling from farther afield, Edinburgh Airport, located eight miles west of the city centre, is connected to over 100 destinations worldwide via over 40 different airlines.

Getting around Walking and Cycling
Edinburgh is a compact city and the majority of venues are located within easy walking distance of each other.
Walking and cycling are fun, low-cost and healthy modes of everyday transport and Edinburgh is the ideal city to explore on foot or by bike. During August, when Edinburgh is particularly busy, the quickest way to get between venues is often on foot or by bike and this is a great way to get a bit active too!
There are numerous shared-use bike paths and on-road routes that will get you close to most venues on the Fringe. The Fringe Programme map includes information on some useful routes, but more complete cycling maps can be found at
innertubemap.com and through

Taxis
The city is dotted with conveniently located taxi ranks, or you can flag down one of the distinctive black cabs (the orange light on top of the taxi means that it is available for hire).
Bus
Edinburgh has an excellent local bus service for getting into the city if you’re staying on the outskirts, or for getting around – most venues are not far from a bus stop. We also have a tramline running directly from Edinburgh Airport to York Place via Princes Street and St Andrew Square. The Transport for Edinburgh smartphone travel app has lots of information to help you plan your journey and their Travelshop locations are shown on the Fringe map.

The Fringe Society is working closely with Festivals Edinburgh and Creative Carbon Scotland to reduce our negative environmental impacts. We’re currently one of the growing number of arts organisations working towards a more sustainable Scotland through participation in the Green Arts Initiative, a project designed to support festivals, venues, companies and audiences in reducing their carbon footprint while participating in the arts.
