Nothing beats San Marzano tomatoes for making excellent, thick sauces.


tomatoes and beans. San Marzano and a family heritage seed from Italy are her favourite tomatoes, and, of course, sweet grape tomatoes need to be plant- ed for snacking as well. The garden is filled with all sorts of beans from fava, Lima, soybeans, green, yellow and purple bush beans, scarlet runners and more. There are lots of unique vegeta- bles growing as well: chick peas, rapini, eggplant, asparagus, radicchio, ground cherries and tomatillos. Cucumbers, melons, zucchini and squash fill up large spaces as marigolds and nastur- tiums grow around them. Petunias, poppies, cosmos, zinnias and sunflow- ers also added colour to the garden


while grapes from a former vineyard on the property grow up along the south side of the garden fence. “As per usual I have a ton of new


plans for this year. I’ve already painted the outside garden fence red to match my grandfather’s chair and ordered 30 yards of compost to top up the beds. I also want to put up new fencing and insert a stand for my mailbox at the front of the garden gate where I plan to store my tools and extra gloves. “Ambitious? Absolutely! I love being


outside and I have so many plans for the yard. It’s just finding the time and money to complete them all,” she laughs. s
