Many have asked me what is the future of the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show? The defi nitive answer is it is going to live on, big- ger and better. The promotors at Portland Yacht Services say that they will announce some ground breaking news at their open house for their new facility on 11 June. This show is special as it draws a number of people from southern New England, due to its uniqueness in that you get to meet the actual boat builder not some salesman. I made a change several months ago

when I switched from micro-cassettes to a digital recorder for doing interviews. I can be slow to make changes, not because I do not embrace technology, but because if something works why change. What a mistake it was not going digital sooner, because the recordings are so much easier to transcribe. If you are going to document certain aspects of history you need good interviews and lots of them. It creates a lot more work, i.e. transcribing, but the value in getting the story correct is invaluable. Anyone who thinks they can write an article by taking notes, often falls short on accuracy. I want true quotes not paraphrasing. On the following page you will note a

new book written by Jonathan Eno, “Naval Visits to Mount Desert Island and French- man’s Bay.” Jonathan did an incredible job putting this together and early on I had off ered to help him publish it. I thought this was going to be a simple book with a little text and lots of photographs, maybe a couple of hundred pages and we would be done a few months. Boy, did I mis-cal- culate that. We spent more than a year and a half type-setting, inserting photographs

and proofi ng and re-proofi ng this book. I will be the fi rst to say I was a little nervous about how it was going to look when it came back from the printer/binder and fortunately I could not have been happier and more importantly the book has been very well re- ceived. Now I am assisting the Blue Hill His- torical Society on publishing a book on their shipbuilding history, which was published as a thesis by Rebecca Herrick more than 50 years ago. The thesis has been digitized and now comes the hard part: research and adding additional material, which both the Society and the author wants to see happen. Time ticks on and on and I am coming

to realize my time is fi nite. You cannot dwell on that, because your clock’s fi nal tick can come at any time. It may stop today or maybe it is in the way distant future. My view is to identify what needs to be documented and work at as best you can to get it done. Every month more and more pages of transcription are completed, mostly in newspapers. I am now up to 1874 in the Republican Journal (Belfast) and I am trying to spending more time up at U Maine working in their news- paper collection. And last month I spent an extra day in Gloucester at their public library working in their local newspapers. Researchers have to be careful that they make sure that at some point they put pen to paper, because it all goes for not if you do not publish your work. Right now I am try to fi gure out how best to document my work in the newspapers as there is so much material it would be overwhelming (boring) to many. I am thinking of a timeline with a brief citation that could lead you to a more comprehensive entry if interested.
