26 August 1903 7 Drowned on Bangor Vessel
The WILLIE L. NEWTON Was Capsized Off Norwalk, Connecticut Owned by Pendleton Bros. Edward Coombs of Islesboro Was Captain – The Entire Crew Perished. South Norwalk, Connecticut, August
26. – The two-masted coasting schooner WILLIE L. NEWTON of Bangor, Maine, was
capsized six miles east southeast of Green’s reef lights in Long Island sound during the storm of Tuesday night. As the craft was completely overturned while the sails were being lowered, it is believed that the entire crew numbering probably seven men were drowned. On body believed to be that of the captain
has been secured, it had fl oated out of the cabin. The wreck was sighted by Capt. Walter Miner, of the tug PATIENCE of New York as his vessel was towing barges from New York to Providence. He fi rst saw a schooner’s keel above water and being convinced that some craft had met disaster, anchored his tow and steamed around the derelict. On determining the fact that a good sized schooner had been wrecked, he attached a line to the keel and brought the vessel into Wilson’s cove Wednesday. After the schooner had been anchored the
tug steamed into Norwalk from which place Capt. Miner sent a message to the owners of the NEWTON. The tug then returned to the schooner and found that the body of a man had fl oated out of the cabin. In the cabin was a letter addressed to Edward Coombs at New London, Connecticut. The postmark shows that the letter was from North Islesboro, Maine. The body was brought here and viewed by the medical examiner. It will be held awaiting identifi cation. The condition of the wreck shows that
the head sails had been blown away and that the lower sails were being furled at the time

The two-masted, 326 ton schooner,
WILLIE L. NEWTON, hailing from Bangor was capsized in Tuesday night’s gale six miles southeast of Green’s reef lights in Long Island sound. The captain, Edward Coombs of Islesboro, and the crew of probably six men are all supposed to have been drowned. The body of one man, supposed to be the captain, has been recovered. The schooner is owned by the Pendleton
Bros. of Islesboro and was built in Bangor in 1881. She put into New London, August 22 for a harbor and sailed from there two days later for New York. Up to the time the Commercial went
press it could not be ascertained whether there were any Bangor men in the crew or not. It is not thought likely, however, as the schooner has not been in this port for some time. Capt. Coombs was well known here.
