issue, with I thought was the fi nal dates for this year’s lobster boat races, I get a call from Bass Harbor saying they had an issue. The person that was going to run the races this year had to bow out for medical reasons and Wayne Rich said he would be doing them again this year. He also was not comfortable running the day before 4 July and wanted to move the races back to 26 June. I understood his concern and thus we agreed to make the change. Also in last issue, the dates in August were incorrect, not sure how this happened, but as CO we know where the blames goes. The above dates have been triple checked and all should be good. Over the last couple of years I have

been working with an author on publishing a book on the warships that visited French- man’s Bay. What I thought was going to be a couple of months project turned into a year and a half. I did the typesetting and got the book ready for the printer. We worked with hundreds of photographs, many of them beautiful images from glass-plates and a brief description of each vessel. In

the end it comprised more than 700 pages, elephant size, and weighing in at more than 15 pounds. The fi nal product came out in- credible and was very glad to have been part of the process. Finally I fi nished entering all the docu-

mented merchant sailing vessels for 1885. A project I did not think would take all winter to complete, but in the end I have 17,227 vessels entered. Just to see how long it is going to take me to do the next year, 1886, I did three pages, comprising about 200 vessels and after two hours I was done. That was considerably faster and made my idea of entering all the years up to 1940 feasible. One mistake I have made over the last

30 years is not doing as many interviews as possible. I captured a lot of history, but there was so much more that slipped by and is gone forever. The old microcassette recorders were okay, but nothing like a dig- ital one. It is so much easier to hear what someone is saying. Writing from recorded conversations is so much more accurate. There are still a lot of people who’s history needs to be captured so my job is not done.
