SNAPSHOT
Calgary’s ITS program explores the latest technological innovations for improving traffic efficiency. In 2016, Calgary will be piloting several new technologies, including a low cost wireless mesh communication system to improve traffic signal coordination, and a wireless magnetometer system to detect and reduce left turn bay overflows
To optimize use of infrastructure, Calgary uses several state-of-the-art lane reversal control systems, run from the City’s TMC
New technology can also enhance stakeholder engagement and citizen communication. Using a 3d model of a section of the downtown core, the City released a video to show the roadway modifications and operations of a recently implemented lane reversal system in the downtown core. The video not only helps to depict clearly the roadway operations, but also allows local businesses to see how parking and driveway access affects their businesses, to provide feedback before implementation.
