anniversary celebra- tion with a worship service in West Philadelphia, Sun- day, April 10 at 10:30 am. Rev. Dr. Charles Booth, pas- tor of the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church of Columbus, Ohio will be the guest preacher of the hour. “We are looking forward to a wonderful service, cel- ebrating God’s faithfulness allowing our church to sus- tain for the past 190 years,” Rev. Dr. J. Wendell Mapson, Jr., senior pastor of Monu- mental Baptist Church, said. The anniversary worship service is just the beginning of the year-long celebration, which includes a summer, church-wide anniversary weekend retreat at Eddy Farms in New York, a fall youth drawing contest,


an anniversary banquet at Springfi eld Country Club, a historical, drama represen- tation and will culminate with a joint, fi ve-church service in December, where four churches with histori- cal ties to Monumental will come together in worship. “We will begin our 190th anniversary celebration in worship and we will end in worship,” Mapson said. Church is the second old- est black Baptist church in Pennsylvania and has been a pillar in the West Philadel- phia community. Mapson, who has been pastor of the historic institution since 1987, is the 20th

Tech Leader to establish roots at uCity Square: Microsoft Innovation Center comes to Philadelphia

new Microsoft Inno- vation Center (MIC) will open to the


public at uCity Square in Philadelphia this summer. The MIC, which is the result of a collaboration between Microsoft Corp., SeventySix Capital, the University City Science Center and Wexford Science & Technology, will be the fi rst in the region and the third in the U.S., with other locations in Atlanta and Miami. The Innova- tion Center complements and enhances Microsoft’s regional presence, which includes an offi ce in Mal- vern and a Microsoft Store at King of Prussia Mall. Currently there are over 350 Microsoft employees in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

fl oor of the Science Center’s corporate headquarters at 3711 Market Street, the MIC will be equipped with the latest Microsoft technology. Through a combination of programming and outreach activities, Microsoft – work- ing closely with the Science Center and SeventySix Capital – will seek to spur economic development and create new opportunities for


the local tech startup com- munity. Further, the MIC will host activities that will bring underrepresented groups to greater awareness of and involvement with STEM activities and careers. “Bringing Microsoft to Philadelphia and uCity Square is a game changer on many levels,” said Sci- ence Center President & CEO Stephen S. Tang, Ph.D., MBA. “Not only have we attracted a large tech com- pany to our city, but the MIC also off ers a means to engage our neighborhood, innovation, and entrepre- neurial communities and give them access to Micro- soft technology and train- ing.
