EDGECOMB – As one makes their way down to Boothbay you will pass on the right side what is obviously a boat yard with several storage sheds. If you look into the sheds you will note that it is fi lled with small wooden runabouts, mostly Lymans. Michael Mayne started this yard back nearly thirty years ago, but now there is a new owner, Mitch Garey.
“I started my own business in 2007, a boat transport business,” said Mitch. “In the winter of 2010-2011 Mike approached me and asked if I wanted to merge my boat transport business with him here at Edge- comb Boat Works with the eventual plan that I would buy his remaining interest out. We were going to do it over a 10 year span, but we ended up doing it in just about 4½ years.”
Mitch thought Mike liked the retire- ment idea and Mike knew that Mitch could handle it. “We came back from Christmas break last year and he said “Are you ready?” and I said, “Yeah I’m ready, ready for what?” He said, “To buy me out.” I said “Let’s do it.” So over the last year we fi gured out with lawyers, guns and money how to make it all work and on October 2 we closed on the deal.”
Mike had bought the former J. Ervin
Jones property in East Boothbay two years ago and that was not part of this deal. Mitch added, “He bought that property personally, gearing towards me buying the business and the property here. We had ideas about going on down there, but that was totally separate. Mike is going to do some side work for me. He’s going to build a couple of swim plat- forms this winter and possibly a windshield for an 18 foot Lyman.”
Mitch added, “When I bought the busi- ness I bought the business end and I lease the property from Mike, with the hope of buying the property in the near future. It was just a numbers game.”
On the property is a nice little Cape Cod house, which is rented. It also means that someone is there at all times, which is comforting to Mitch. Also on the property is the main work shop with four bays and fi ve storage buildings. Mitch said, “There is a storage building up on top of the hill that is specifi cally designed for 26 foot Ly- mans. Then the building on the right as you enter the driveway fi ts the 25 foot Lymans perfectly. I will put the bigger boats in the back of these two storage buildings in the main driveway and fi ll in the front later. The big storage building on the north-side of the property is for whatever is left.

“The plan going forward is to build a heated storage building,” continued Mitch. “I am thinking of taking this building here and convert it, or maybe picking it up and moving it up the hill. Another option is may- be building a different building, which is probably what I will do with the thought that I would like to have four bays. I can move it back and kind of over and have three regular heated storage bays and then have an extra working bay for the long term projects.” Mitch’s aim for the future is trying to get a few more outside storage boats. “It is one thing Mike never really went after,” said Mitch. “Another thing that I’m really gearing towards is trying to get into the high-

Another major plus for Mitch was the employees that have been with the compa- ny for a number of years. Mitch explained, “I have got an incredible crew. The three guys that work for me full-time are very self-motivated. Jerry has been here pretty much since the beginning and before that he worked at Goudy & Stevens. Sam is the
