Hansen, a 10-year veteran of Virginia Beach city government, will start the new job immediately. Before his selection, he was one of three deputy city managers in Virginia Beach, overseeing five departments: Budget & Management Services, Communications & Information


Technology, Finance, Public Utilities and Public Works.


“Dave has earned the respect of this City Council, business and civic leaders and employees,” Mayor Will Sessoms said. “He knows this community and he understands what we need to do to keep moving forward.”


Hansen joined the City of Virginia Beach in April 2006 after a 30-year career in the military. His assignments included deputy chief of staff for resource management with the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, commanding officer and district engineer of the Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District, and director of public works for Fort Eustis and Fort Story.


Hansen has a master’s degree in strategic studies and logistics from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, a Master of Business Administration from the Florida Institute of Technology, and a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting from the

As a Schwarzman Scholar, Thomas will pursue, all expenses paid, a one-year Master’s at Schwarzman College of Tsinghua University, in Beijing, China.

Update February 2016 Virginia Governor Visits Suffolk's Kerma Medical Products


Staff at Kerma Medical Products, located at 215 Suburban Drive, in Suffolk, had the opportunity to present their product lines and manufacturing processes to Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe during his recent visit. The governor, along with Maurice Jones, Secretary of Commerce and Trade and other administration officials met with Suffolk Mayor Linda T. Johnson and Kerma employees and toured the increasingly-growing commercial medical equipment company that has been in Suffolk since 2011. Kerma, a VOSB (veteran-minority-owned small business), employs approximately 80 people and manufactures and supplies medical products to over 4,000 acute care hospitals and government agencies.

Creek High School was recognized by the Virginia Mathematics & Science Coalition (VMSC) as a 2016 Programs That Work. The Programs that Work Awards recognize exemplary mathematics, science, and integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs in Virginia for which there is evidence of a positive impact on student or teacher learning. The award was presented to Mrs. Heather Ott, academy coordinator, and Ms. J. Page Bagley, Deep Creek High School principal, by Governor Terry McAuliffe and Dr. William Murray, policy director for Dominion Resources, at a reception in Richmond at the Library of Virginia on January 19, 2016.

The goal of the program is to greatly enhance students’ knowledge, attitudes and skills while introducing awareness of the vast opportunities available in the fields of science and medicine. Students throughout the city apply for admission into the academy in the spring of their eighth grade year, and up to sixty freshmen are accepted into the program each year. Students must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, teacher recommendations, successful completion of Algebra I, and evidence of interest in science or medicine as demonstrated through completing an applied science assessment. Students who are admitted into the program are provided a student-centered learning environment which prepares them for competitive post-secondary learning. This is accomplished by providing a specialized, rigorous curriculum which is heavily focused on the science and medical fields.
