When discussing students, and how they get into the workplace, a common theme has been the importance of internships. A lot of phrases have been bandied around the press since the release of the Autumn Statement and the Green Paper, entitled ‘Fulfilling our Potential: Teaching Excellence, Social Mobility and Student Choice’, last year: ‘apprenticeship levy’, ‘Office for Students’ ‘Teaching Excellence Framework’ etc…etc...

The Autumn Statement started the buzz in the student recruitment industry with the announcement of the apprenticeship levy, admired and abhorred, depending on who you ask. The BPP Professional Apprenticeships team explain all you will need to know about the levy and how it will affect your business (page 12). Stephen Isherwood also demystifies these two policy initiatives proposed in the latter half of last year (page 8).

The Green Paper arrived with lots of fanfare, and rightly so, as it could lead to a complete shake-up of the higher education system and the recruitment policies of employers. Mike Grey, Gradconsult, goes into detail with the wide-reaching impact of these changes (page 15), with him welcoming the call for adopting the grade point average (GPA) but lamenting the extra assessment students may have to go through.

So with all this talk of education and employability changes, has anyone asked the students, the very focus of these policies, what they think? NCUB have, and some interesting and surprising facts have come out of this (page 16). As with the last issue regarding innovation, data and technology are still playing an important part in deciding policy and recruitment.

Only time will tell how all these policies will influence the UK student recruitment market. Here’s hoping it creates more balanced and stable education and employment opportunities for young people; the future of Britain’s workforce.
