Water Conditions 59°F

SURFACE TEMPERATURE: LOW HIGH

VISIBILITY 61°F 5'–15'

The strong onshore wind and large west swell on Thursday will stir it up in the cove for a couple days. As the wind and swell drop over the following few days it should clear up a bit inside, though the deeper areas further offshore should hold the best visibility. Thursday early and Friday afternoon the shoulder to head-high surf will have great form on those breaks that set up well for a W/WNW swell. Boaters should keep an extra eye out for divers near the reefs and channel edges and divers always mark yourselves and area appropriately.

Visibility based on existing conditions and NOAA predicted swell and weather conditions at press time. Check up-to-date daily visibility/ conditions at the San Diego County Lifeguard info line: 619-221-8824

Exposed pilings from the old Cardiff pier

What gives with Car- diff parking lot? Repairs to the riprap rock protecting part of Cardiff State Beach’s parking lot came just in time. The project quickly went from planned maintenance to an emergency repair.

Work began on December 21, just one day before the king tides — tides of over seven feet were expected to pound the Car- diff coastline. The morning tides, which occurred December 23 through December 25, took away sand and threw seaweed and cobblestones into the parking lot. On Christmas morning, overlooking

Inshore: Sculpin, or California scorpionfish, are back on the menu as of January 1 and in the first 2 days over 600 of the spiny-yet-tasty fish were taken from San Diego landings. Yellowtail are still chewing on the yoyo iron at the Coronados, off the canyon edge and near-shore banks in 100-150 feet of water. Kayakers, being a bit stealthier than the average motorboat, are getting a few of the often shy white seabass to bite in the usual

the swiftly moving water exiting the mouth of the San Elijo Lagoon, at the parking lot’s north end, a regular beachgoer said, “We would have lost this area,” as the high surf splashed up.

Several barrel-shaped chunks of con- crete either washed up or became exposed, some with wood or rebar sticking out. These are presumably the bases of pier pilings from the old Cardiff pier, which fell into the ocean almost a hundred years ago. “We’ve been surfing over these for years,” said a lifeguard.

“We’re concerned what will happen with this winter’s predicted storms,” said the lifeguard. In the El Niño year of 1982– ’83, waves crashed into the three beach- front restaurants, washing away tables and chairs. In the last El Niño of 1998–’99,

Coast Highway 101 was closed numerous times when high tides sent cobblestones across the four-lane road. Riprap boulders placed back in 1999 have protected the road since.

Never gaffed a fish before… what? It was a beautiful fall day in late November. The water temperature was 64°–66° in the kelp beds off of Point Loma.

My brother-in-law, Tom, and I decided to take our little 12' aluminum skiff out from Shelter Island and try our luck. We had heard that there were bonito biting at the mouth of San Diego Bay, so we started our day there trolling jigs. We got one strike and missed it. I was handling the

spots off La Jolla on dropper-looped whole market squid or on the yoyo iron.

Outside: Yellowtail are still biting well on the yoyo iron from LA County down the coast of Baja. The outer banks and Baja coast are churning out good lingcod action along with a steady supply of reds and vermillion rockfish. Whitefish are being caught in decent numbers off the deeper high spots in 180 – 210 feet of water. Further south, 5-day and longer boats venturing to Cedros and beyond are still getting wahoo to bite on the high spots as well as some yellowtail surface action and decent yellowfin tuna

boat so I blame Tom for that one. It was getting near 11 a.m. and we still

didn't have any fish. We reeled in the jigs and decided to head into the kelp beds and try our luck at some of our secret spots. We hit the kelp about a half mile south of the O.B. Pier and started throwing plas- tic lures, hoping for a white seabass or maybe a nice calico. Working our way south, we began to catch fish. We caught several short calicoes, some mackerel, and a short Johnny bass. Still, nothing for the barbecue. Finally, just off of Adair Street, Tom caught a nice 4.5 lb. calico bass. As usual, he was outfishing me and I was starting to feel it.

I switched my lure to a glow-in- continued on page 76

to 80 pounds off Mag Bay. 10 day and longer boats traveling to the offshore banks in the long-range “zone” south of Cabo are reporting large yellowfin tuna in the 150-200 pound class with a few cows near or at 300 pounds.

12/27 – 1/2 Dock Totals: 1,248 anglers aboard 72 boats out of San Diego landings this past week caught 440 yellowtail, 49 calico bass, 98 sand bass, 4,349 rockfish, 99 sheephead, 167 bonito, 88 whitefish, 39 lingcod, 691 sculpin, 35 blacksmith, 10 croaker, 23 halfmoon, 10 sanddab, 87 rubberlip seaperch, 6 halibut, 8 bocaccio, 1 finescale triggerfish and 5 barracuda.
