Boat And Ship Yard News Wilbur Yachts Refi ts MA Division of Fisheries Patrol Boat

MANSET – There have been a number of signifi cant boat repair projects on the coast of Maine over the years and there are several reasons why a Maine yard is cho- sen, but it usually comes down to quality, timeliness and price. There are a number of yards that can easily step up and do some very impressive work. Last winter Wilbur Yachts of Manset, took on a South Shore 38, which was suffering from years of nor- mal use and wet core. When they fi nished up, this 38-footer had a new lease on life, which pleased her owner, the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries. John Kachmar, owner of Wilbur Yachts, went down to Clark Island Boat Works in St. George and found that they did not have time to do a refi t on this 38 footer. He contacted the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and went down to discuss the project with them. He put a bid together and won the project. John explained, “We got the boat up

here the fi rst of January, and started working on it. We found out there was a lot more to it than what was originally thought. We knew we had core issues in the superstruc- ture, but unfortunately the water had really

run. We ended up pulling it all apart, both wash decks all the way aft. We had to take the wash decks completely off and rebuild them. The deck on the starboard side at the hauling station was completely rotten. We ended up cutting that all out and rebuilding that whole deck. Since the deck was out we put a new 37 gallon hydraulic tank in. We put soft mounts on the engine and tried to get some additional sound insulation in the boat. We got quite a bit in and in the pilothouse it is great. The whole exterior of the boat was faired and painted. The interior of the boat was sanded and faired before we re-sprayed it. At the hauling station the overhead was just a fi berglass mat panel so we pulled that down and found there were a lot of holes so we rebuilt it. There is a new electrical panel and we reran all of the wires for the batteries and the engine. We went through and replaced a number of the hydraulic hoses too. One thing we changed…in order to be able to run the wash-down pump versus fi ll the lobster holding tank there was a valve that you had to pick up and pulled down that happened to be down inside of the head. So you had to go down into the head,

open up the bulkhead and get down behind there. It was sort of a pain in the neck. So we replaced the valve and in the process we ended up taking a Morse control, just a pull button, so we could actually control it in the companionway. That worked pretty well. We went to Delta T and got some new air boxes so we were able to change the air boxes around a little bit. When we redid the superstructure, there were some air boxes
