LETTER FROM BATH PLACE

What’s up at the AGR office Hi,

What a great three months I have had working at AGR and I still can’t believe we are nearly in December. The festive season is almost upon us as we start to organise Christmas trees, gifts and, not forgetting, the annual work Christmas party. Personally, I am looking forward to having my first white Christmas, rather than my usual BBQ at the beach in shorts and a vest. Having come from working in the graduate

industry in Sydney, Australia and being an active member of the AAGE (Australian Association of Graduate Employers), I have an understanding of what you as members expect from us as your membership association. Also, having worked for Australia’s leading bank in learning and development for over nine years, I see the importance of how each of us needs to understand what the business requires and be able to add value in all that we do. Thus, my mantra since joining AGR is to always think of the member in everything I do and ask myself: ‘Does this add value to our members, and will it assist them in adding value to their business?’ My perspective of learning is about developing

knowledge and/or skills of individuals, which can then be applied immediately back into their workplace. I am also a strong believer that each of us like to learn using different methods (face- to-face, eLearning, videos), at different times (on the way to and from work or during lunch) and using different modes (mobile, laptop or tablet). AGR Professional, our learning and

development platform, was launched in June this year. Its purpose is to offer our members a one-stop portal to support in the development of your knowledge and skills in a wide variety of areas. The focus of my role will be to build and strengthen the learning offerings of AGR Professional and make it a worthwhile feature of our membership offerings. It currently offers more than 10 learning topics with over 30 learning resources in four different delivery modes. At present, I have been working on increasing

the range of learning topics offered as well as ensuring that there is a wide variety of delivery modes available for each of our members to have the ability to choose how they would like to learn. I am also about to get my teeth stuck into the AGR Development award process.

What you should expect in the future is a new member mentoring program, a second tender to increase our learning offering as well as an increased focus on utilising technology in our learning and development conferences. Having already met some of our members, I thank you for making me feel so welcome. I am also looking forward to meeting each and every one of you over the next few months. I welcome any feedback and suggestions from you, as they are very important for developing the learning offerings of AGR Professional. If you come across any articles, TEDtalks, videos or attend a training course that you think would benefit one of your colleagues in the industry, please let me know at tony@agr.org.uk. I look forward to sharing the success of AGR Professional with each of you.

Happy Holidays Tony
