November 2015 Around Hampton Roads

and supporting local businesses. Each organization has championed this cause through their ‘Be a Local LOVEVA’ and ‘Love Local, Buy Suffolk’ initiatives respectively.

President and CEO of Retail Alliance, Ray Mattes, said, “We’re looking forward to ReStored and promoting the benefits of supporting your local businesses. When you shop locally, you’re supporting your local charities, schools, and community improvement projects. We’re so passionate about supporting local business that we’ve developed a free LOVEVA app that people can download to help people find local businesses throughout Hampton Roads that allows the user to earn rewards for shopping locally.”

The City of Suffolk is extending Restaurant Week through the weekend to support ReStored. There will be other festivities throughout downtown Suffolk that weekend and the City of Suffolk is expecting 700 people across the weekend to attend.

Suffolk Department of Economic Development Director, Kevin Hughes, said, “We are excited to support businesses in our area and we are thrilled to be partnering with Retail Alliance on such a creative initiative. We think it is going to be a great weekend for families to come out to shop before the holidays, enjoy live music and children’s activities, and support the independent business community.”

If you are a retailer or specialty vendor and are interested in participating in the ReStored Downtown Pop-Up Shop Initiative, please contact Katherine Seibt, LOVEVA program coordinator for Retail Alliance at kseibt@retailalliance.com 757.965.3000, or Deanna Holt, Suffolk Economic Development Manager at dholt@suffolkva.us 757.514.4049.

Virginia Beach Recognized as National Veterans Day Regional

parade and ceremony, on behalf of Southside Hampton Roads (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach) since 1970.

Michael Maliniak, president of the Hampton Roads Council of Veterans Organizations (HRCVO) and event coordinator, said, “We are very proud to once again be recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veterans Day National Committee. Our Veterans Day activities, especially the support provided by the many organizations that participate and assist with the events, provide a unique opportunity to show our appreciation for the sacrifices our Veterans have made to maintain the freedoms that we enjoy in our nation.”

This year’s parade, co-sponsored by the National Sojourners, Inc., will be held Wednesday, Nov. 11, starting at 9 a.m., along Atlantic Avenue, beginning at 16th Street and ending in front of the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, 1000 19th Street. The parade will include military units from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard that represent the 12 military installations across the region. Veterans from Pearl Harbor, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Desert Shield, Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom will participate, as well as several Tidewater municipal and veterans support organizations, including local high school bands and Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.

The Veterans Day Parade is sanctioned by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Veterans Day Committee and the Mayors of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Virginia Beach who sign a proclamation resolving that “citizens, businesses and organizations demonstrate due appreciation, admiration and respect for

all veterans who have served our great nation”.

A formal ceremony that includes military, federal, state and local dignitaries will be held following the parade at 11 a.m. at the Tidewater Veterans Memorial, located on 19th Street across from the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Immediately following the ceremony, a luncheon honoring Veterans is held at the Doubletree Hotel.
