Costain, the Maidenhead-based engineering solutions provider, announced another strong performance with increases in revenue (£621 million) and underlying operating profit (up almost £2m on the 2014 figure to £13.1m), a record order book (up 16% to £3.7 billion) and a 15% increase in the interim dividend for the first six months of 2015.

The group also announced it has been awarded the £605m contract for the east works package of the Thames Tideway Tunnel in London in Joint Venture with VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche.

The news helped boost the share price up 16% during August in a month when the UK index was generally depressed.

Accesso Technology Group, which has its European headquarters at

Twyford, also saw its shares up 16% after announcing a five-year extension on its current deal with Australian theme park Dreamworld. The site, which includes 50 rides and wildlife attractions, was the first Australian theme park to adopt the group’s “LoQueue” technology.

Accesso says it is leading the way with patented virtual queuing solutions and setting new standards in attraction ticketing.

Star performance in the region was again in the sub-£50m turnover section, where Godalming-based Triad Group saw its shares rise 33%. The group has been designing and building applications since 1988, and has a proven track record in consultancy and delivering innovative solutions on a variety of devices including desktops, tablets and smartphones.

www.businessmag.co.uk Last year’s HWYE competition finalists

Tough worldwide economic conditions and a challenging UK job market are producing some determined and innovative young entrepreneurs. This is making the selection process for the 2015 Thames Valley Haines Watts young entrepreneur competition tricky for the judges too, as only five finalists can be chosen

This year’s competition has now closed for entries and potential contenders are being interviewed by partners at Haines Watts to try and secure a place in the finals on November 12.

The overall Haines Watts Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition winner will win a fantastic and useful set of prizes worth up to £5,000*. This includes a year-long mentoring and support programme with a partner from Haines Watts, free publicity and a further cash prize of £500, taking their total cash prize to £750.

All finalists receive £250, mentoring, free publicity and are also entitled to free desk-space at GROW@Green Park for one month.

Jane Gregory at Haines Watts, said, “The Thames Valley has a thriving population of talented young entrepreneurs from a wide range of business sectors, who show that you do not necessarily need years of experience to start a profitable business. Although the UK boasts

one of the best education systems in Europe, business leaders still have concerns that not enough young people are displaying the right skills when they begin employment for the first time, so it’s great to find such proactive individuals entering our business competition.”

The many talented applicants who don't make it through to this year’s HWYE finals might be interested in applying for the 2016 competition when it opens next spring.
