Moving posts more often than every two years. Moving when other major life events are taking place, eg having a baby. Husband was posted when son was 4 weeks old and we weren’t sure when we’d get allocated a house. Substitute accommodation doesn’t provide the family with much needed links to the base community. It also assumes the family will and can run two cars.
My career has suffered. My CV is starting to look really patchy and looks like I can’t stay in a job for very long. RAF bases are not often near big areas of employment so commutes are then long for the non-serving spouse.
Short notice allocation of postings. Longest we’ve had is 8 weeks. My notice period at work has been longer than this! Change of SFA at last minute once we’ve organised childcare and employment for me.
Advantages: Pension, Pay and Allowances, Subsidised Service Accommodation. Disadvantage: Long working hours, inability to choose where you serve, impact also on non- serving family
Barriers put in way of pregnant or new mothers returning to work with little or no understanding of pressures faced by new breast feeding mothers
So many hours he can’t live at home with us. Its a secure career with opportunities for variety and learning new stuff and promotions. Disrupts family units as fathers (etc) have to be away all the time
The frequent moves to totally different parts of the country have totally wrecked two careers for me.
