Cox Communications Honors 2015 Virginia's Future Leaders Scholarship Winners
$1,000,000 in scholarships have been awarded to Virginia students attending Virginia colleges and universities since 2000
CHESAPEAKE, VA-- Thirty-five outstanding area students have been named 2015 Virginia's Future Leaders Scholarship winners by the Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association (VCTA), the Donald A. Perry Foundation and Cox Communications Virginia. These scholarships are among 77 awarded to Virginia students this year by cable systems across the Commonwealth. In total, $100,000 in scholarship funds were awarded for 2015.

Now in its 15th year, the Virginia's Future Leaders Scholarship program is a statewide education initiative of the Virginia cable industry. To date, more than $1,000,000 in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding Virginia students attending Virginia colleges and universities.
"I am delighted the Virginia Cable Industry is generously helping Virginia students further their education by awarding $100,000 in scholarships," said Secretary of Education, Anne Holton, "these scholarships will assist in relieving some of the financial burden on students and their families as they pursue higher education, which is critical to success in the New Virginia Economy."

TE Connectivity Invests
$9 Million, Adds 66 Jobs at Hampton Subsidiary
Hampton - The governor’s office announced that TE Connectivity Ltd. will invest $9 million and add 66 new jobs to expand operations at its Hampton-based subsidiary, Measurement Specialties Inc.
“Building the technology and advanced manufacturing sectors in the Commonwealth is critical to creating a new Virginia economy, and we are proud that corporate partners like TE Connectivity are an important part of our efforts,” said Gov. Terry McAuliffe.
Hampton Mayor George Wallace said TE Connectivity’s commitment was excellent news for the city. “Hampton continues to focus its efforts on the retention and attraction of high-wage and high-skilled jobs. TE Connectivity’s decision to add a new advanced manufacturing line in Hampton is a tremendous success for us. Hampton has the workforce, infrastructure, amenities, and favorable business climate that effectively positions us to retain and attract more companies like TE Connectivity.”
Founded in 1983, Measurement Specialties designs and manufactures sensors that measure various physical properties, including pressure, force, vibration, temperature and humidity. Measurement Specialties was acquired by TE Connectivity in 2014.

Non-Profits Sought to Be Official 2016 One City Marathon Charities
The City of Newport News is seeking non-profit organizations to apply for designation as an official 2016 One City Marathon charity. The deadline to apply is September 15th and applications are available on the marathon website
atwww.onecitymarathon.com/charities. The number of charities selected will be determined once applications have been received and reviewed.
Criteria for organizations to apply to be an official One City Marathon charity are: Must be a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit;
Must be in operation for a minimum of one year; Must create a link on its website to the Marathon website; and Must guarantee a minimum of 20 volunteers for the event weekend.
The selected charitable partners will benefit from promotion on the marathon website and through social media, inclusion in the post-race celebration and other race weekend events, and online donation opportunities at race registration. Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from the marathon will be distributed to selected charitable organizations.
The 2015 charitable partners – the Newport News Mayor’s Book Club, Soundscapes and the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank – each received their share of over $20,000 in marathon proceeds and direct contributions.
Again presented by Newport News Shipbuilding, the second annual Newport News One City Marathon will take place Sunday, March 13, 2016. The marathon will run the entire 26 mile length of the city, with Newport News Park as the setting for the start of the race and the Victory Arch in downtown will serve as the finish line. Along the way, the certified course will take runners past various cultural amenities, educational institutions, businesses and neighborhoods. The marathon, which also offers a relay option, culminates at a One City Celebration festival at Victory Landing Park as runners race through the finish line. In addition to the marathon, there will be an 8K Run/Walk and a Kids Fun Run. Marathon weekend (March 11-13, 2016) will also include a Health and Wellness Expo and other community focused events.
Norfolk Seeking Applicants for Spay & Neuter Services and Public Education
Funds will be awarded to eligible animal organization(s) to provide low-cost spay/neuter assistance services to income-eligible Norfolk residents and education and outreach programs.
The City of Norfolk is pleased to announce the availability of funds for Spay and Neuter Services and Public Education Programs. The FY 2016 Approved Budget includes $25,000 for grants to eligible 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit service organization(s) for spay and neuter services and public education programs.
Funds will be awarded to eligible animal organization(s) to provide low-cost spay/neuter assistance services to income-eligible Norfolk residents and education and outreach programs.
Spaying and neutering companion animals helps address pet overpopulation. This program is designed to support eligible organizations in providing sterilization services for up to two animals per income eligible households in Norfolk. Awardee(s) will be responsible for verifying residency and income eligibility of those requesting spay and neutering services.
The priorities for the program and funding are as follows:
1. Targets low-income communities and populations and details how the applicant will meet that targeted community.
2. Provides public education and outreach components to low income communities.
Virginia Cooperative Extension to Celebrate 15-Year Anniversary with a Fall Festival
On Saturday, September 26th, Virginia Cooperative Extension will be celebrating 15 years of providing services to the Portsmouth community from their office in Kingman Heights. From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend the Fall Festival and Anniversary Celebration at their office which is located at 105 Utah Avenue. This anniversary celebration for the public will include a plant sale, yard sale, children’s gardening activities, tool sharpening - for a small fee, beekeeping demonstrations, live chickens, and a plant doctor information booth. September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when the Suffolk Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country to promote the value of a library card and library services.
