Archaeology of Rouken Glen

O V

T

ver the last few years, when you have been visiting or walking in the park you may have seen people digging up the grass or scrambling about in the bushes. Fear not, for the people you have spotted are nothing more than archaeologists who have been exploring the park’s past as part of the Heritage Lottery Fund Park Improvement Project.

olunteers and archaeologists from Archaeology Scotland have been uncovering the park’s history by investigating the ancient and more recent past of the glen. They

uncovered a medieval mill, recorded the 19th and 20th century industrial remains and even created a 3D image of some rock carvings that are thought to be around 3500 years old. It has been a fascinating journey so far. Next up is the excavation of Thornliebank House from 5 – 12 September that aims to uncover more about the people who once lived in the big house and how it was used in more recent times. The excavation is open to volunteers of all ages and will give you hands on experience of what it is like to be an archaeologist.

he excavation also coincides with the launch of the Scottish Archaeology and Heritage Festival by Archaeology Scotland in the Pavilion Visitor Centre on 5 September at 10.30am. There will also be tours of the park, an exhibition, displays and, in keeping with the history of the park, there will be fun events for families, including Victorian games and object handling. Don’t miss the excavation or the official Scottish Archaeology and Heritage Festival launch. Book the date in your diary and you are sure to have ‘A Grand Day Out’. For more details and to apply for the excavation please email Phil Richardson of Archaeology Scotland at p.richardson@archaeologyscotland.org.uk
