Ranger. Schools involved included Braidbar, Busby, Crookfur, and Netherlee Primaries, St Luke’s and Williamwood High Schools.
ver 70 people attended our BioBlitz event in the Pavilion Visitor Centre in June. ast Renfrewshire’s Adult Learning Team has been working in partnership with the Rouken Glen Park Activities Staff to organise Family English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) events this summer.
The woods provided a fantastic base for the groups to take part in the fun activities. Parents and children from Japan, South Korea, France, Hong Kong and Scotland, worked together on their bushcraft skills, making shelters out of natural materials. They then enjoyed hot chocolate using a Kelly Kettle. Team activities prompted the families to communicate in English whilst having fun and getting to know new people. We’ve also had two Ramadan Clubs in the Park in early July. They took part in woodland games and activities such as sensory activities designed to help children explore their environment.
ur Riverbeast Explorer activity at the end of June was very popular and fully booked with enthusiastic families wanting to learn more about the minibeasts to be found in the Auldhouse Burn in the glen.
Rouken Glen Volunteers
ur wildlife garden continues to develop thanks to our two additional needs volunteer groups including individuals from Quarriers, Thornliebank and Barrhead
Resource Centres and Cosgrove Care. They have been preparing flowers beds, weeding and pruning trees.
Also Dates-n-Mates - a charity that helps individuals with Additional Support Needs to meet socially, planted trees in the wildlife garden as part of their John Muir Award environmental scheme.
Staff from McDonald’s Restaurant in Thornliebank took part in a corporate volunteer day. Branch Manager Jim McLean commented, “Fantastic experience which was well organised and delivered in a very efficient and friendly way. Very enjoyable and the team really felt that they had made a contribution.”
We are looking for more volunteers to help us. If you are interested, please contact Katy, Activity Ranger on 0141-638 4121.
In addition, pupils from the Isobel Mair School holiday programme got involved in environmental arts, crafts and sensory activities, such as making clay monsters out of natural woodland materials.
If your school or community group would like to take part in Activities at Rouken Glen Park, please contact Katy, Activity Ranger on 0141-638 4121.
