Catch a rising star under a thatched roof

“ONE of the prettiest pubs in Devon” has another, very special, claim to fame which very few country pubs could boast. Not only was their Head Chef Kris Jury selected as an entrant to 2014 Masterchef – The Professionals, but he found himself competing against Jamie Rogers, a former Chef from the same venue! Under the thatched roof of this 14th century quintessential village pub, Kris is creating culinary delights from the very best produce Devon has to offer. At just 23 years of age, he is bringing excitement, innovation and interest to the menu of The Tradesman's Arms and is revelling in the opportunity he has been given by owner Cathy Sanders.

"It is a huge responsibility being Head Chef at any age because such a large part of an establishment's reputation lies in your hands so I really do appreciate her belief in me by appointing someone of my age to that position. It is a wonderful chance for me to continue to create and develop my own style whilst training others who will, hopefully, forge their own careers in the industry.”

That responsibility was just reward for the dedication Kris has shown to date, including spending 3 years of his days off working, unpaid, at Le Gavroche to gain experience in a Michelin- starred restaurant. He has been putting that experience to work here in the South Hams for us all to enjoy over the last 4 years. His aim…."I want to wow people with food - I like there to be a point behind it and, hopefully, we'll get a few rosettes very soon!"

Not that The Tradesmans Arms is any stranger to accolades as it is amongst the very few exclusive Inns in Devon to be recommended as one of Alistair Sawday's 'Special Places to Stay’.

Cathy explains, "I see The Tradesmans Arms as the whole package - if you want to stay somewhere fabulous; enjoy dining at the highest quality; meet friends over a pint; book for one of our special themed evenings, or have traditional Sunday roast without the effort, we offer it all - and Kris is a very important part of that offering. Where else could you spend an evening dining in the style of Heston Blumenthal, for example, at a traditional flower-bedecked village pub?"
