"Peters Canyon" continued from page 1
down the middle of the narrow park, the majority were shocked. All manner of hikers, equestrians and cyclists objected to paving any part of the park, and cited the dangers of combining fast-mov- ing commuter bikers with pedes- trians and horses. OC Park staff agreed to consider an alternative bikeway that would parallel Jam- boree road, but be separated from traffic lanes.
Not so fast The San Clemente-based Or-
ange County Bicycle Coalition objected to the Jamboree Road alternative, and launched a peti- tion (
OCbike.com) to preserve the route through Peters Canyon. To support its position, the coali- tion pointed out that Peters Can- yon Park is for public recreation, paid for by tax dollars; it is not a “wilderness” and bicyclists using a paved trail to traverse the park will not disturb its ambiance. “It is on the master plan for the good of all, not for the exclusion by some,” the coalition’s petition said. “Bicyclists new and old find riding on Jamboree unsafe, given the high rate of speed driven by autos.” Within a few weeks of its post-
ing, the online petition had been signed by 303 people. Support
for the paved trail through the park focused on safety, access and opportunity. “I am an avid cyclist,” one signer wrote. “Cy- cling on a designated bike path away from traffic should be en- couraged for public safety.”
Pathway to paradise “It will provide a better oppor-
tunity for families, kids, seniors and the disabled to experience the beauty of the canyon,” another explained. “Serious cyclists will continue to use Jamboree.” “I concur with the public value,
improved cyclist safety, and en- hanced ambiance of the proposed trail,” one cyclist wrote. “I do not believe it presents any form of detraction from the park.” And another, “I’d rather ride through the park than next to fast traffic on Jamboree. It’s a pretty space cyclists should be able to enjoy.” The bike coalition petition was
countered with another (change. org) introduced by Friends of Pe- ters Canyon, a subset of the Foot- hill Communities Association. While the group emphasized its support for a Class 1 bikeway in the vicinity, it opposed locating it through the park. “We support a Class 1 bikeway extension, but the proposed routing would be a bad -- and a dangerous -- deci- sion. It makes more sense to ex- tend the existing off-street bike- way. The park is meant to be a

natural space -- half of Southern California is paved already.”
Space is limited To date, the Friends’ petition
has amassed 1,182 signatures. Opponents of the park route stress safety and damage to the natural environment. “I am a road biker,” one wrote. “But I live adjacent to Peters Canyon, and walk there frequently with my dog. There are way too many hikers, dog walkers, and mountain bikers to add road bikes going fast down the middle of the canyon.” “I am a regular hiker in Peters
Canyon,” another advised. “My family is made up of road bikers, and we all feel that while bike lanes are needed, the location in Peters Canyon does not make sense. The continuation of the off-street bike path west of Jam- boree is a good idea.” Another signer noted that Pe-
ters is “the closest little remnant of wild I can retreat to in the midst of so much pavement.” A kindred spirit agreed, “It has always been a small getaway from ‘city’ and the cemented world. There must be a way to achieve a pathway without invading nature.” OC Parks has yet to present
its alternate bikeway plan along Jamboree to the public. How- ever, the fervor of both groups suggest the ultimate decision may be left to the board of supervisors.

Orange names new The City of Orange announced
the appointment of Jack Thomas as interim chief of the fire depart- ment, effective Aug. 6. Chief Thomas started with the
department in 1988. During his 27 years of service, he has held every rank in the organization, including Orange Fire Explorer. Thomas has been a firefighter, paramedic, engineer, captain and, most recently, battalion chief. This “ground floor” experience has given him a unique perspec- tive on the department and the people and businesses of Orange. “Chief Thomas’ record of
achievement, and his commit- ment to the citizens of Orange, makes him a great choice,” said Orange Mayor Tita Smith. Thomas and Lesa, his wife of
30 years, have three adult chil- dren, and a brand new grand- daughter. He credits his father-in- law, Larry Wampler, for his entry into the fire service. “He was my Chief Jack Thomas
interim fire chief mentor and role model,” Thomas says. “My father-in-law was hired by the Orange Fire Department in 1967, and retired in 1996 at the rank of fire captain." Firefighting must be in Thom-
as’ blood, as his twin brother is a battalion chief for Anaheim. Thomas will be taking over as
interim chief from Pat Dibb, who is retiring.
