entrant, Chris Smith’s MISTY in Class I, so he joined Class J. The stand out in Class J this year has been Eric Beal’s JENNA MARIE, however a threat could by Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 36, 650-hp Scania]. MISTY jumped out in front with JENNA MARIE as they both went on to win their respective classes. For the fi rst time this year Jeff Eaton’s LA BELLA VITA and Gary Genthner’s LISA MARIE [Libby 34; 690-hp FTP] would meet in Class K. Last year LISA MARIE had dominated this class, but that is not what was going to happen today. LA BELLA VITA took the lead and never looked back with LISA MA- RIE second and Nick Page’s new boat ALL OUT [Calvin Beal 38, 750-hp John Deere] third. There had been a week since the last race at Bass Harbor and both Ed Shirley’s MISS KARLEE [Mitchell Cove 32, 1,000- hp Caterpillar] and Cameron Crawford’s WILD WILD WEST [West 28; 1,050-hp Isotta] have been worked on as they keep looking for more speed. WILD WILD WEST pumped the smoke out when the fl ag dropped as MISS KARLEE jumped out in front. When the smoke cleared from WILD WILD WEST’s stack she began to gain, but did not have enough track to get by. There was no entrants in Class M(A), so up next was Class M(B), with seven boats on the line. It was going to be a great race between James Thurlow’s FAMILY TRADITION and Billy Bob Faulkingham’s 51. At midway it was 51 by a matter of feet and he went on for the win. In Class N, from Harpswell came Tom Clemons and his 4 GIRLS [Wesmac 46, 1,000-hp Caterpillar] and he lead the competitors down the course.
Four boats came to the line for the Gaso-
line Free for All, but missing was FOOLISH PLEASURE and THUNDERBOLT. They had already loaded on their trailers and departed. The outcome was not in doubt as LITTLE GIRLS took the lead and screamed

Everyone was ready for the rematch between MISS KARLEE and WILD WILD WEST in their second and last race of the day, the Diesel Free-for-All. There were so many entrants that the class was split and the top three from each heat would face off in the fi nals. MISS KARLEE won the fi rst heat and WILD WILD WEST the second. In the fi nals MISS KARLEE jumped into the lead, and WILD WILD WEST was back, but her exhaust cleared quickly and she was coming. Midway she was back, but right on MISS KARLEE’s stern and gaining. By the fi nish line it was WILD WILD WEST, MISS KARLEE second and LA BELLA VITA third.
LA BELLA VITA took on MISTY and WIDE OPEN in the Boatbuilders Race, and they fi nished in that order.
The Jimmy Stevens Cup, Fastest Work- ing Lobster Boat, had eight entrants and there were some real close fi nishes. MISS KARLEE took the win with LA BELLA VITA second, but sliding into third was TURN THE PAGE followed by LISA MA- RIE.
The fi nal race of the day, Fastest Lob-
stah Boat Afl oat, had LITTLE GIRLS and WILD WILD WEST facing off with LA BELLA VITA. LITTLE GIRLS instantly jumped into the lead and once WILD WILD WEST exhaust cleared she was on the move, but there was not enough of a course left to get the lead and settled for second. Now it was onto Friendship for the sixth race of the season. The morning of the race there was fog all over Penobscot Bay, so the question was who would brave the weather. When I arrived at Friendship just before 0800 there was no fog in the harbor, but there was a wall all around it. I began sign ups about 0900 and just after 1000 we had 33 entrants. After a year off and the thick fog along the coast it was a good turnout. First up were the three Work Boat Class-
es. In Class A there were two entrants and the winner was Brady Carter in a 14-footer with a 25-hp outboard. Coming all the way from Portland, but on a trailer, Marshall Spear and J-BIRD had little trouble getting by Al Strout’s CLUSTA [Lowe 18; 40-hp Tohatsu]. In Class C, three boats were on the line and the fi rst over was Jeromy Simmons’ MAKIN’ HAY [Mitchell Cove 20, 135-hp Mercruiser].
In the Gasoline Classes there were no entrants in Classes A, B and D and there was just one entrant in Class C, BLACK DIAMOND and Class E FOOLISH PLEA- SURE. They were run together each winning their respective class, but it was not surpris- ing as FOOLISH PLEASURE crossed the line fi rst with a speed of 57.8 mph. Now it was onto the Diesel Classes.

In Class A there was just one entrant, Alex Benner’s SEADUCED [Osmond 27, 220- hp John Deere] and one in Class B, Don Drisko’s MERGANSER [33’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 230-hp Yanmar] and they were run down together. All the way from Long Island came MISS ATTITUDE, who was up against Raymond Carter’s WHO’S BUYN [Flower 33; 300-hp John Deere] from Waldoboro. MISS ATTITUDE took the lead and sailed easily to victory. Also from Long Island, was Justin Papkee’s PULL N’ PRAY [Repco 37; 325-hp Caterpillar] up against Robbie Maloneaux’ MISS ADALYN [Maineway 35, 330-hp Caterpillar] in Class D and he had no problem getting the win. In Class E, there was just MISS KATIE, so he raced in Class F, which also had just one entrant, MS. ROSE. Even though they both won their respective class, the race was close, but in the end it was MS. ROSE getting the separation. There were no entrants in Class G, but there were two in Class H. Frank Guptill’s DAWN MARIE [Calvin Beal 36, 500 hp FTP] took the lead when the fl ag was dropped and Luke Kochs’ VIKTORIA LYNN [Newman 36, 460-hp Caterpillar] fi nished a couple of boat lengths back. MISTY was the only entrant in Class I so he lined up with the only entrant in Class J, Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL [Calvin Beal 36, 650-hp Scania].
Again they each won their respective class, but who would win the race? This was close, I mean real close, as they came across the fi nish line bow to bow. Thankfully we did not need to fi gure who was fi rst. Now came a grudge match between LA BELLA VITA and LISA MARIE in Class K. As the two came up the course it was bow to bow and the radar gun was reading both at 40 mph. At the line it was LA BELLA VITA by half a boat length. There were no entrants in Class L and none in Class M(A), but there were two racers in Class M(B), Travis Doughty’s CHELSEY ANN BRIELLA and Mike Jameson’s LOW BUDGET II [RP 40; 650-hp Lugger]. When the fl ag dropped CHELSEY ANN BRIELLA opened up a lead which slowly grew as the two headed for the fi nish. The last Diesel Class, Class N, had three racers on the line and the boat to beat was Keith Simmons’ HEATHER & ISAAC [Young Brothers 45; 1,000-hp MAN] who jumped out ahead of his brother, Greg Simmons in AMY LYNN [Wayne Beal 40, 800-hp Deutz]. Third went to their other brother, Andrew Simmons’ CORRIE ME- LISSA [Wayne Beal 40, 875-hp Caterpillar]. Five boats were on the line for the Fastest Friendship Lobster Boat and again it was HEATHER & ISAAC getting the lead, followed by AMY LYNN and LOW BUDGET II.
There were two boats ready for the Gasoline Free-for-All, but we all knew that FOOLISH PLEASURE would be the win- ner unless he had a problem. As they came up the course it was close until about half way when Galen gave FOOLISH PLEASURE more and more throttle. He sped up the last half, but near the fi nish a problem developed and he coasted over the fi nish line fi rst. When Galen went by the fi nish line fl oat he said that he had broken the bell housing so he was done for the day.
Now it was time for the Diesel Free-for- All and the grudge match was back between LA BELLA VITA and LISA MARIE. There were fi ve others on the line, but all eyes were on these two as they raced up the course and at the line it was LISA MARIE by half a boat length. Third went to MISTY and fourth was BLUE EYED GIRL.
There was only one entrant in the Wood-
en Boat Race A, which was MERGANSER and with no entrant in Wooden Boat B, MERGANSER ran up in the Fastest Lobster Boat race, which was the third head to head race between LA BELLA VITA and LISA MARIE. Again it was extremely close, but this time LA BELLA VITA got the win by half a boat length.
Six points races were now complete with three two go (Winter Harbor, Long Island and Portland). The fi nal year-end winners are starting to shape up. There has been some real close competitions within several of the classes and one can bet this will continue the rest of the season.
