The schooner STEPHEN TABER.
ROCKLAND – One of my favorite events of the year is the Great Schoo- ner Race, where most of the schooners sailing on Penobscot Bay race from Islesboro to Rockland. This year the race was scheduled for 3 July and I was placed on board the schooner HERITAGE, Captains Doug and Linda Lee masters. The weather
was beautiful, the only questions was would there be any wind. We were one of the fi rst heading out of the harbor to the starting buoy just south of 700 Acre Island. The course would take us across the bay to a buoy south of Curtis Is- land, Camden, then back across the bay, past Mark Island to a buoy just east of the island, then back across the bay to buoy south of Rockport and to the fi nish at the Rockland breakwater.
It was a great sail with a moderate breeze out of the northwest. We round the

buoy fi rst off Curtis Island and also the one off Mark Island. We kept looking for the southwest breeze and sailed further down the bay hoping to get to it fi rst. However, we forgot about the next mark, but fortunately due to the light wind and time constraints the race committee opted to drop this mark and have us all sail for the fi nish. That was great for us as we continued looking for the sou’wester. It became obvious that those that stayed in the nor’wester did much better. ANGELIQUE had now slipped by and she sailed over the fi nish line well ahead of us to win the Leeward Class. We cross second in class and then headed for the town dock and the awards ceremony.
If you have never sailed on one of these schooners you should. It is an incredible time and one you will not forget.
