Jersey 2015

Jersey doesn’t need the sunshine to make sights such as La Corbière Lighthouse beautiful—but its 1,882 hours of sun per year are certainly attractive

HE travel website TripAdvisor recently named Jersey as number six in its top 10 islands of Europe for 2015, putting it ahead of the perhaps more obvious choices of Mallorca, Capri and Corsica (Sardinia didn’t get a look in, incident- ally). It cited the island’s annual ‘Battle of Flowers’ and the Moonlight Parade

(both of which take place in August) as well as its multitude of watersports, cafes and shopping opportunities as reasons why the Channel Island is worthy of its listing. But it’s not just in the summer months when Jersey comes into bloom. In these pages,

Agnes Stamp puts together an itinerary of engaging things to do in all seasons (page 16), from visiting the lavender farm to delving into its history and sampling menus from the four Michelin-starred restaurants on the island. Although it was once presumed that the only people who move to Jersey are couples

in retirement looking to preserve their wealth and enjoy a quieter life in a milder climate, today, enterprising families with young children are proving to make up the lion’s share of incoming residents. Arabella Youens asks Kevin Lemansey of Locate Jersey about the process of moving to the island (page 22). The island is home to a varied selection of property options, from contemporary beachfront houses with dramatic sea views to trad- itional granite farmhouses—Carla Passino finds out what’s on the market (page 12). One of the many benefits of living on Jersey is a negligible commute, so time not

wasted squashed in a packed train carriage or stuck in a traffic jam is put to good use. But don’t assume that downtime is just about gardening and golf—the social scene is pretty lively. In order to help the settling-in process (or ‘on-boarding’ in Jersey-speak) along, new residents will be invited to four or five events hosted by corporate or private individuals, from evening racing at the island’s racecourse to Champagne receptions on yachts. Our Luxury Editor, Hetty Chidwick, finds out what else is going on this summer (page

21), including a secret supper club for like-minded foodies to picnics on Sark organised by the trendy Longueville Manor hotel. Arabella Youens
