Taking care of waste is an eventful business
With summer in full swing, thousands of spectators will be attending events across the region – from major attractions such as the Rewind Festival in Henley and The Big Feastival in the Cotswolds, to more community-based events such as Wallingford BunkFest and Towersey Festival in Thame
But behind every hot dog enjoyed, every day tripper or camping fan, there’s always a need for waste management.
As the name suggests, Grundon’s special events services team does exactly that – helping event organisers and production companies to manage their waste and recycling effectively in an environmentally-friendly and sustainable way.
The award-winning team handles a variety of events of all shapes and sizes, right down to village fetes, corporate events and even private parties
who simply need a few bins to dispose of glass bottles, plastics and non-recyclable waste.
Working in partnership with event organisers means Grundon can offer a bespoke service, ensuring that waste is collected quickly and efficiently, while having the minimum impact on those attending.
Shaun Workman, sales manager for the special events services team, said: “Planning ahead is essential, when we’re talking to event organisers the key elements we need to know are issues such as how many people are likely to attend; what the
site looks like; whether there will be food or camping facilities available; and what time of year it’s taking place.
“We can then provide a clear idea of the waste management facilities required and how the operation can be handled. Most event organisers want to be seen as ‘green’ and we can help by providing clearly labelled bin stations with separate bins for materials which can be recycled and for those which can’t, in which case they go to our Energy from Waste facility instead.

Retention initiatives
In terms of retaining talent, those surveyed stated that they use a variety of initiatives. These include promotion, flexible working, share schemes and training. 63% of survey respondents said that their current attrition rate was less than 10% which is encouraging, however remuneration packages may need to be given priority based on Hays’ 2015 findings that over half (54%) of employees expect a pay rise and 48% expect a bonus.
From the latest Barometer report, the main issue which appears to need addressing is the shortage of skilled labour required to meet current business objectives. Nationally we know companies are facing this same problem, a picture which is emerging most

prominently in sectors such as manufacturing and construction, according to BDO’s national Business Trends Survey.
Demand for skilled staff is evidently outstripping supply. One suggestion might be to review training structures and schemes and assess their effectiveness in producing home-grown talent. This would reduce a company’s reliance on sourcing talent externally and drive excellence within their workforce. The business community and local authorities also need to work together to ensure that the region remains an attractive location for skilled people to work and live and for ambitious businesses to thrive.
