‘Taking care of energy and the environment’


n April, the Editor was invited by Flexenergy of Glenrothes, Scotland, which supplies the full range of Flexalen pipes and associated services throughout the UK, to visit the factory of Thermaflex at Waalwijk in The Netherlands to see how these flexible, pre-insulated pipe systems are made. The trip also included a visit to Capelle aan den Ijssel, where Flexalen pipes were being installed at a district heating scheme.

Today, we are very much aware that close to half of the energy produced on this planet is used for heating and cooling. Most of it is generated by burning fossil fuels. This is what motivates the mission of Thermaflex to minimise the waste of energy and maximise the use of renewable fuels under the motto ‘Taking care of energy and the environment’. Established in 1976, this family-run business has


expanded to become an international player with five production facilities and 16 sales and support offices worldwide, and has carried out successful projects in over 45 different countries.


For three generations now, the focus of the business has been on insulation and thermal energy distribution. In everything it does, the management and staff are inspired by nature as they believe it is always systemic,


smart and efficient in its solutions. Many of its concepts and products are inspired by trees, from leaves to branches, from trunk to bark and roots. This is because trees are an important part of the ecosystem as they form the connection and conversion of the elements of water, air, earth and fire. In the early days, thermal energy production and consumption were highly localised, based on local needs,
